How To Get Over Someone You Never Really Had

A lot can be said about boys who can’t make up their mind. On one hand you have to admire them for being so indecisive that they drag others down with them and on the other hand not making any concrete commitments may keep them out of trouble. I for one can say that the boys who have recently come and gone from my life this past year have been the most commitment shy boys (please note that they are not men) I have EVER met. This is how to get over someone you never really had.

1. You don’t want someone who doesn’t want you.

I don’t care how many times you’ve been deceived. Never forget that the time you spend sulking wondering what you did wrong really is only going to end in disappointment because no explanation will ever be good enough for you. As it shouldn’t. A guy breaking things off with you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with him!

2. Being ready to commit is perfectly ok!

Maybe you’ve been in a dozen relationships or maybe you’ve only been in one – whether or not you’re ready for something serious is completely dependent on you. It sounds cliché but when you know you’ll know. The perfect person will probably trigger that sinking and exciting feeling in the pit of your stomach and remember that there may be more than one perfect person. Sometimes the timing may not be ideal.

3. You are allowed to be sad.

Don’t tell yourself that crying is stupid – because it’s not. Being sad about being let down and lied to is a completely legitimate reason for being upset. Maybe you felt something and mending a broken heart will take some time. Grab the bucket of ice cream, throw on an episode of Gilmore Girls and cry… just cry.

4. You never have to speak to them again; it’s your choice!

Whether or not you want to cut the cord or maintain a friendship is completely up to you regardless of what your male counterpart has requested of you. Take your time so you don’t make any rash decisions you might regret. Keep in mind that this person was likely someone you trusted and was a safety net for you. There may be a point in time where you need that person to lean on. Make sure you don’t burn your bridges to soon.

5. Take some time for you to reevaluate.

If it takes a week or six months to get back on the saddle depends on the person. Some people are able to move on quickly while others need some time for reflection. Looking back to see what worked and what didn’t could potentially help you in future relationships. You’ll be able to figure out what you do and don’t want in a relationship and maybe figure out the tell-tale signs of a guy who’s starting to get cold feet.

I am a firm believe that there is someone out there for everyone. You may have found that person already and you don’t even know it or maybe you’re still waiting for the special one to come along. Regardless, part of the process includes heartbreak. Lift your head up and keep your eyes on the prize… one boy is not worth your time if you weren’t worth theirs.
