Getting a locker is totally worth the investment, especially in the winter months. I’ve learned the hard way that carrying your winter jacket around and spending all day in boots is no fun. It’s so much easier to ditch your stuff in a locker.

I’ve learned in the last few months that the Tim Hortons on the 4th floor of the UC is probably the best bet for a quick coffee and snack. The one on the first floor always has an obnoxiously long line and doesn’t have much choice left.
Most places on campus will charge you less if you bring your own mug! Saving a few cents on every coffee will be totally worth it in the long run.
Something that the CU bookstore does is price matching! If you browse around online and look for some cheaper prices you can take them into the bookstore and they will price match. This is super convenient and will save you lots of time.
If you fancy a walk down the street, Haven Bookstore or Octopus bookstore are great options for textbooks too!
Your Carleton student card offers a variety of discounts so be sure to take advantage of them! Most loblaws, metro and Independent grocery stores offer 10% off on Tuesdays. Bulk Barn gives you 10% off on Wednesdays, Tucker’s Marketplace and Menchie’s(specific location) offer discounts as well. A few museums, and recreational facilities give CU students discounts too. The library offers a wide range of resources, from TA’s and grad students who can help you with your essays, to access to archives and so much more!
If one of your courses has PASS workshops you should definitely check them out. If you’re not up to go every week, maybe just take advantage of it before tests and exams.
Carleton is home to a newly renovated gym that has some amazing work out equipment.
I learned this the hard way. Please save yourself and don’t take an 8am class, especially if you live off campus. Even if you think you’ll enjoy it or it will be interesting you will probably be napping the whole time.
Going to events is probably one of the best ways to meet people! Stepping out of your comfort zone and saying hi to someone could result in new friend. Join a club or society and mingle away. Carleton is also big on Greek life if you’re interested in a sorority or fraternity.
When public transport becomes your life, you need something to keep you on track. This app so great to get bus times and schedules, it’s super helpful and such a lifesaver.
Another app that is wonderful to have is the CU Mobile app. It’s one of the best life hacks at Carleton University. You can access your schedule, classes and your student accounts.
These are great for getting textbooks, furniture and so many more random things.
As long as your professors are ok with it (which they usually are) recording them are great. You can go over them and make sure you caught everything from the lecture.
Skimming is one of the most essential skills you will need to learn. Let’s be honest no one has time to do all of the reading for every class.
