Whether it’s your freshman year or your senior year, it is safe to say that during your time as a college student, you have questioned A LOT of things. Here are 10 things every Dalhousie University student asks themselves!
1. Do I REALLY need a degree?
I’m sure it’s not just Dal students who ask this. Probably anyone who is contemplating spending $80,000 on a piece of paper that is supposed to help you get a job is wondering the same thing.
2. Do I HAVE to go to my 8:30 class?
I asked myself this every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in my first semester last year. The answer is YES, because if you don’t then you’ll probably fail.
3. If I get out of bed at 8:25 will I make it to my 8:30 class?
One of my friends did this and it seemed to work for her. If you live on campus in residence, then you’ve got a pretty good chance to make it, especially if you’re the type of person to go to class in your PJs.
4. Why does everyone have to drive to school?
If you have a car, you probably ask yourself this at 7:55am because somehow that is even too late to find a decent parking spot on campus.
5. Will I still pass the class if I don’t take the final?
Ever heard of that website called RogerHub? It will actually tell you if you’ll pass or not. You’re welcome.
6. When is Pierogi night in the Res meal hall?
Pierogi night is the BEST!! I’ve only seen them in Howe, but I’m sure Shirreff and Risley probably have them too. Obviously they’re not as good as home-made pierogis, but they do satisfy your cravings.
7. How the hell do I navigate through the tunnels?
The first time I went in the tunnels, I was walking from the LSC to Killam – the whole stretch. I got lost somewhere between the Chem building and Killam basement because the signs can be a little confusing and hidden sometimes.
8. Can the tabletops on the desk in Macmechan be any smaller?
Seriously though, how does ANYONE write on a desk the size of their thigh?
9. What exactly IS that statue on University Ave??
Everyone tells us that it’s called “Marine Venus” and it can be very awkward to walk past if you’re with your parents on a tour. They ask “WHAT IS THAT” and you just laugh because it looks like a penis. To answer your question, Marine Venus was supposed to be mounted in a reflecting pool, but due to cost, it didn’t happen. In short, yes, it looks weird, but in its defense, it never really got its time to shine.
10. Why is tuition so high?
And FINALLY, THE BIG QUESTION. Why is tuition so expensive? Most of us are fresh out of high school and some haven’t even had a job yet. Some rely on their parents and some rely on government assistance. Why is this OK??? Why do I have to start my adult life with thousands of dollars of debt that I won’t be able to pay back for many years???
