Packing for university can be stressful. Especially if you have a lot of clothes and don’t know what to pack. Pro tip: DO NOT bring your entire closet with you. You will not have enough space for all of it and you won’t wear every single item. Bring your closet favorites for each season and switch some pieces out as you go home for the holidays. Here are some wardrobe essentials that every university student needs throughout the year.
1. Basic Tees
T-shirts are one of the basic items everyone has in their closets. They are so versatile and comfy. Bring some basic tees (white, black, and gray) and graphic tees; you can wear them if you are lounging around your dorm or dress them up for going to class.
2. Black Leggings
Would it be a university girls’ wardrobe without leggings? Leggings are a staple, especially around the fall and winter. They are a great layering piece and black leggings go with literally anything.
3. Dark Wash Skinny Jeans
You absolutely need a good pair of jeans in your closet if you are a university student. A dark wash skinny pair will do the trick, because again, they go with just about anything.
4. Your University Sweatshirt
Time to show some school spirit! By the time you get to your final year at uni, I bet you will have a ton of school gear. A hoodie or sweatshirt is the perfect place to start to show your school pride and it’s also one of the most important wardrobe essentials if you plan on going to any sporting events like homecoming.
5. Classic Converse Sneakers
These shoes are not going out of style anytime soon. Converse are great for walking around campus and pair well with a lot of outfits. You will need shoes that you can throw on to go down to the cafeteria or to hang out in a friends’ dorm.
6. Thin and Comfy Cardigan
Lecture halls are known for their bipolar weather, my chemistry lab is like a sauna and then my English class feels like the arctic. As a university student you need a few wardrobe essentials that cater to all temps. I suggest a thin cardigan because it keeps you warm and it’s thin enough to fit your bag.
7. Infinity Scarfs
Scarfs are the perfect accessory when you’re running late for anything. Have no idea what to wear, throw on a pair of jeans, a white t-shirt and add a circle scarf; it will make you look put together. Also, in the winter scarfs are essential for a quick outfit. A white knit scarf, chambray shirt, and messy bun should do the trick to looking effortlessly chic.
8. Black Blazer
As a university student you need to be prepared to dress professionally sometimes throughout the year. A black blazer is a great place to start, you can wear it to class presentations, job fairs, or any school event that requires you to dress professionally. I suggest you bring at least one outfit that you can always turn to.
9. Baseball Cap
Walking to your 8 a.m. class is not fun, I know in the mornings you do not want to talk to every person you pass by. Pop on a baseball cap to shield your eyes- no one will bother you (and it completes any sporty outfit).
10. Semi-Formal Dresses
Sometime throughout the year you will encounter some sort of semi-formal event, maybe you joined a club and they have a party, or your faculty throws an event, so it’s always nice to have options. If you plan on rushing for a sorority definitely bring a few more.
11. Boots
Depending on where you live, you will need a great pair of boots. Winter is brutal when there is snow and ice on the ground and you’re rushing to go to class. Bring a good pair of riding boots or snow boots, no one will judge; actually they will be wishing they were as smart as you.
12. Cross Body Bag
You might not realize this, but you will not want to take your backpack or school tote wherever you go (shopping, party, restaurant etc…). Bring a small cross body bag, big enough to hold your phone, keys and school I.D. A cross body is ideal because no one will take it from you if it’s secured over your shoulders.
13. Heels
You need a few different shoe options as part of your uni wardrobe essentials, and this includes a good set of heels. Perfect for going out with friends or to the semi-formal events you might go to; bring a classic black or nude pair so they can go with any dress or outfit.
14. Light Jacket
You will need a light jacket for in between seasons. I know by late October, sometimes even September, it gets cold. A light jacket will keep you warm and tend to make your outfit a bit more sophisticated as an added perk.
15. Watch
A watch is essential; they are perfect for those professional outfits and look really cute with winter and fall ensembles. Not to mention if your class room does not have clock and you don’t want to fish your phone out of your bag, a watch is perfect.
