11 Tips I Wish I Knew Before Carleton University Frosh Week

Check out these tips for Carleton University frosh week to help you feel better prepared for this exciting start!

1. Go to as many events as possible.

I know at first, some of the events may seem lame, but honestly those are the ones you will make the best memories at. In my first year, a couple of my roommates and I randomly decided to go see a reptile show, and it is one of my fondest memories! You pay to participate in frosh, so why not take full advantage of everything? After all, the more events you go to, the more people you will meet!

2. Step out of your comfort zone.

Chances are, everyone on your team is in the same situation as you – in a new city and eager to find new friends! Talk to as many people as you can, and maybe you will find your new bestie. All you have to do is say hello to someone, and anything can happen from there!

3. Don’t party too much.

Carleton frosh week just happens to take place at the same time as the first week of classes, and you do not want to skip these! Your first classes are very important to attend, so that you know what textbooks to buy and when your assignments will be due. Drinking every night during frosh is really not a good idea, and you can definitely get through it sober!

4. Bring a water bottle everywhere you go.

A lot of events during the afternoons will take place outside, and usually they will have water stations (with VERY long lines). Bringing your own water bottle is very convenient and it’s very important to stay hydrated in the hot Ottawa sun!

5. Go to the club fair!

This is the perfect opportunity to find out what kind of extra curriculars Carleton has to offer! There will be something for everyone here, and there are representatives from each of the clubs on campus available to talk to if you have questions.

6. Take advantage of all of the free stuff.

It may sound annoying, but going around to all the booths and simply to talking to someone for one minute will allow you to either enter a contest, get a free water bottle, or even a snack of some sort. You won’t realize it, but you will be collecting a lot of awesome and FREE things!

7. Avoid going to Hull.

I know it seems amazing that you will be able to go to Hull to party and drink, but believe me, you will get sick of it. If you go too frequently at the beginning of the year, you are going to be tired of it within the first month. Plus, you will definitely be able to find parties on campus, as well as off campus!

8. Make friends with your frosh facils.

Your frosh facils will be upper year students, and it will always seem like they are super pumped for everything – even at 8 a.m. It’s very good to have an upper year you can talk to throughout the year about adjusting to university life, and it’s always nice to have connections (especially if they are in a similar program to you).

9. Use the time to get to know your roommates/floor mates.

Carleton University frosh week is the perfect opportunity to get to know everyone you will be living with for the next eight months. You will all be on the same team, and it’s very nice when you actually have friends to talk to. Doing simple things like leaving your dorm room door open when you are in the room will also let people know that you are just so excited to get to know them!

10. Explore campus.

During the first week, you should definitely explore campus (with your roomies, or by yourself) to get familiar with where all the buildings and resources are located. Knowing where your classrooms are is a very big help, so that you will know exactly where to go when the time comes. Hanging out by the river is always very nice, too!
