10 Breakfast Ideas for When You’re Sick of Your Regular Cereal

You can’t control a lot of things in life (sorry for the reminder) but you can control what you eat for breakfast. You shouldn’t settle for cereal just because it’s easiest. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, after all: make it one you actually enjoy! To do so, here’s a list of breakfast inspiration for when you’re sick of that plain old bowl of cereal.

1. Overnight Oats

Oatmeal gets a bad rep for being boring, but it doesn’t have to be if you know how to make it right! Overnight oats take away an entire step of traditional oatmeal-making: waiting for that water to boil. Skip it and make it the night before!

All you need are oats, milk of your choice (or even water), sweetener of your choice (it could be maple syrup or honey) and toppings like berries, nuts, seeds, peanut butter or maybe even nutella. Just throw it all in a mug, mix it up, and stick it in the fridge overnight. In the morning you will have a delicious breakfast waiting for you!

2. Omelette

Omelettes are much easier to prepare than they appear. All you really need to do is decided what toppings you want, grab a pan over medium-low heat, and beat an egg or two. You can add cheese, veggies, tomatoes – there are loads of possibilities when it comes to omelettes. And they really only take minutes to make, and they can sort of pass as fancy food! Not bad for a Monday morning!

3. Breakfast Smoothie

Smoothies are a great way to get some extra fruit and veggies in your diet – and it won’t even seem like you’re eating them! There are a hundred of smoothie recipes and variations, but if you stick to a few key ingredients then you can mix and match any flavors you want. For example, if you prefer a colder, thicker consistency, then you might want to add ice. For creaminess, add milk or yogurt of your choice, in addition to whatever fruit you like. Flavor possibilities are endless!

4. Stovetop Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal

Again, who said oatmeal needed to be boring? Here’s an easy way to jazz up your traditional steel cut oats. Chop up an apple into small chunks, toss it into a warm pot with some butter, and let that warm up for a few minutes. Then you can go about making oatmeal like any other way, with your choice of milk or water and some cinnamon. Let that simmer and then you’ll have a delicious, healthy, perfect-for-fall breakfast.

5. DIY Breakfast Sandwich

Breakfast sandwiches are a good option because they don’t have to require much cooking. All you’ll have to do is toast your bagel, english muffin, or toast – whatever you like! Then you can add some deli meat, cheese or an egg cooked to your preference. Maybe add some spinach or tomato for some veggies, and voila! You can also make these in bulk and then stick them in the fridge to eat throughout the week. Less hassle for you in the long run!

6. DIY Granola

If you’ve got oats in your pantry, you can make your own granola! And it’s really simple and comes out delicious! Besides oats, you’ll need a sweetener such as honey or maple syrup, some nuts or seeds, and some dried fruit. You can totally customize this recipe to your own preference, and the cool thing is, you can make a big batch of granola that’ll last you a week or two! You can snack on this while on your commute, eat it with milk the way you would cereal, or you could also potentially make this granola and then include in another recipe such as…

7. DIY Yogurt Parfait

A yogurt parfait! Super easy to assemble, good for on-the-go too, and since you’re making it yourself instead of buying it pre-made, you can cut out all that extra unnecessary sugar that goes into the store-bought parfaits. Again, you can totally customize this recipe to your taste preferences. Grab some yogurt, plain, vanilla, whatever; pile on your granola; maybe throw in some berries or sliced bananas, and keep layering until. . .voila! A lovely, colorful breakfast.

8. Healthy Banana Bread

Do you have a fruit bowl? Is said fruit bowl full of bananas? Are those bananas beginning to turn brown and spotty. . . and starting to look a little unappetizing? Don’t throw them out – turn them into banana bread! Banana bread is delicious, easy to make, and a great way to waste a little less produce. Banana bread is fabulous on its own, but you can add walnuts, chocolate chips, maybe even both if that’s your fancy. Plus a loaf may last you all week (emphasis on may: it depends on if you can resist eating the whole loaf in two days).

9. Pancake Bites

Enjoy pancakes on the go with these pancake bites! They’re versatile, easy, and freaking adorable. You can take your regular boxed pancake mix, throw in some fixings like blueberries or chocolate chips, and drop them into a muffin tin for baking. You can make them in bulk and have a supply for the whole week! Which is good because look at them – don’t they look addicting?

10. Blueberry muffins

Who doesn’t love blueberry muffins? They’re a classic. And yeah, you could get one from a cafe on your way to work or school, but it’ll taste much better knowing you made it yourself. Plus, like pancake bites, blueberry muffins are easy to grab and go, and a batch will last you all week. If blueberries aren’t in season where you live, or you’re just not that into them, it’s easy to swap out fruits in muffins: you could do strawberry, cranberry, apple. You could even take that banana bread recipe from before and turn it into muffins!
