5 Book to Film Movies & Shows to Watch on Netflix

There are many books to film movies and shows created over the years. Netflix is a great place to find excellent adaptations of books. Some are Netflix Originals, and others are readily available films or shows that have been on television or in theaters. Netflix provides some excellent choices to watch. Here are five books to film movies and shows to add to your Netflix watch list.

1. Dumplin’

Dumplin’ is a film adaptation of Julie Murphy’s young adult book of the same title. Dumplin’ is a Netflix original film about a plus-size teenager named Willowdean Dixon, whose mother is a former beauty queen. Willowdean sets out to prove a point by joining a local beauty pageant as a protest, but what she finds, in the end, is far more meaningful than she could have imagined. Willowdean’s revolt brings together a group of girls that form a friendship and bond over their shared goal. Willowdean looks to memories of her late Aunt and gains confidence from her and the music of the incomparable Dolly Parton. The film touches on love, loss, friendship, and self-confidence. A second film based on the sequel to Dumplin’ titled Puddin’ is in the making and will also be on Netflix.

2. The Kissing Booth 1 & 2

The Kissing Booth is a book series created by Beth Reekles and was adapted to film by Netflix in 2018. Since then, a second film graced Netflix in 2020, and a third film will release in 2021, According to Joey King. The movie is about a teenager, Shelly (Elle) Evans, and her navigation of friendship and love. Elle and her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney) are nearly inseparable. Elle and Lee come up with an idea for their school’s event, a kissing booth. The booth forces Elle to face her feelings for Lee’s older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi). By facing reality, Elle must choose between breaking one of her friendship rules with Lee and risk their friendship for love. Overall, the Kissing Booth series is a coming of age film that navigates the things we cherish most in life, love, and friendship.

In The Kissing Booth 2, Elle must deal with new issues, a long-distance relationship, and getting into college. Elles’s boyfriend is away at college, and she is a senior in high school. Elle searches for a way to earn money to go to the college of her choice but finds herself in a challenging situation. Elle must decide how to handle long distances, what she wants, and how to make the right decision for herself.

3. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Kiernan Shipka and Ross Lynch star in the Netflix series adaptation of Archie Comics, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows a teenager by the name of Sabrina Spellman, except she is far from typical. Sabrina is a witch that must maneuver through teenage and family drama mixed with the dark side of the witching world. Sabrina lives with her aunts Hilda and Zelda. She must balance between being half human and half witch, all while fighting off evil forces that threaten her and her family. A crossover will release in December of 2020 with the original Hilda and Zelda Spellman from the 1996 Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart. It’s a must-watch series if you like dark shows. 

4. To All the Boys I’ve Ever Loved

To All the Boys I’ve Ever Loved is a Netflix film based on the book series of the same name by Jenny Han. This coming of age film starring Lara Condor, Janel Parrish, Israel Broussard, and Noah Centineo. To All The Boys I’ve Ever Loved follows a teenager by the name of Lara Jean who has written love letters to every boy she has a major crush on, but instead of giving the boys the letters, she keeps them stored away. That is until the letters get mailed, and Lara finds herself facing her past crushes one by one, including her sister’s boyfriend. In an attempt to save herself, Lara finds herself in a predicament that thrusts her into an unexpected romance with one of her crushes.

Since the release of the film in 2018, a second film, P.S I Still Love you, was released in 2020. P.S. I Still Love You adds Jordan Fisher to the cast, along with a cameo from Maddie Ziegler. P.S. I Still Love You tackles the notion of the grass being greener on the other side. Lara Jean is face to face with one of her previous love letter recipients and finds herself questioning how she feels. Lara must decide what she wants and what is best for herself, which is no easy feat for a teenager, let alone an adult. The To All the Boys I’ve Ever Loved series the perfect coming of age film and book series. A third film is confirmed and set to release soon.

5. After

Josephine Langford, Hero Finnes Tiffin, and Selma Blair star in this film adaptation of Anna Todd’s book series After. Tessa (Langford) is a college freshman who is trying to navigate and balance college life while discovering who she is, what she wants, and what love is. Tessa finds herself entangled with a handsome rebel, Hardin (Tiffin), and begins to question everything she knows and believes. The film After is reminiscent of the Cruel Intentions film; it starts innocently. However, when love and feelings are involved, everything Tessa and Hardin know changes. The film takes a look at human nature, inner conflict, and the pressures of being “perfect.” The movie After is a passionate journey of life, love, and self-discovery. A second film for the series is now available on Netflix.

There are endless amounts of a book to film movies and shows available on Netflix to discover. There are many types of genres to choose from and entertain. Dumplin’, The Kissing Booth, To All the Boys I’ve Ever Loved series, The After series, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are just some of the great ones to start watching.
