A Book Worm’s Guide To Independent Book Stores In San Fernando Valley

These days it seems like bookstores are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Amazon and other online booksellers seem to be taking over, leaving many wondering if a world without bookstores is eminent. For a bookworm like me, a world without bookstores seems like a nightmare. As other fellow bookworms will tell you, going to the bookstore is an experience, so when you happen to stumble upon a literary gem, take advantage and go inside. Even when if you live in a small town like me, there is bound to be a bookstore waiting to be explored. You just have to get out there and explore. Maybe you will find some hidden gems like I did.  Here are my top picks for the top independent book stores in San Fernando Valley!

1. The $10 or Less Bookstore

Located in a little strip mall, this bookstore offers discounted books to it’s patrons. You can scan for hours through the book shelves and be sure to find something you’ll enjoy. One of my favorite features about this bookstore is the “Blind Date with a Book”. Books from different genres are gift wrapped in brown butcher paper and clues like “A story of two star crossed lovers” is written on the front. It is a fun way to choose your next read!

2. The Iliad Bookshop

This adorable bookstore not only has beautifully painted, literary themed, murals, but it also has life-sized books outside that are Instagram worthy. As soon as you walk into the shop, there are books stacked up floor to ceiling! All the shelves are tightly packed with books, they look like they are bursting at the seams. If you’re lucky, you might get a visit from the two resident cats, Zeus and Apollo. If you are ever in the Valley, this bookshop is a must-stop hot spot! This is one of the best book stores in San Fernando Valley.

3. The Last Bookstore

This bookstore is world famous, or at least Instagram famous! Located in LA (about 30 minutes from the San Fernando Valley), it takes up almost an entire block! Inside,  you will be met by a floating book display, a book tunnel, and a chamber filled with Lovecraft novels. It is definitely a must-see among book lovers. Be sure to commemorate your outing with a photo in the book circle and share it on Instagram!

4. Bargain Books

This bookshop is another store that looks like it is about to burst at the seams with books! Located on a quiet street between two busy avenues, this bookshop seems like a safe haven from the noisy, bustling city life that awaits just around the corner. They have a wide selection of books not only for adults, but also for teens and kids! As the name promises, everything in the store is discounted so you can feel free to leave the store with bags and bags of  books! This is one of the best book stores in San Fernando Valley.

5. Mid-Valley Branch Used Bookstore

Located inside the Mid-Valley Branch Library of the San Fernando Valley, this little shop is run by the local librarians in order to raise funds for the library. What’s great about this bookshop is that there are two library carts of free books that you can choose from without a fee, but an optional donation. While I recommend buying from the used books (some are just a dollar), if you are low on cash, the free donation carts are a great option! This is one of the best book stores in San Fernando Valley.
