It is always a great idea to have bonding activities with your roommates. Since you will spending at least a year together, that year would go by much more smoothly if every one got along. If you haven’t thought about it yet, here are 10 bonding activities that you can do with your new roommates.
For people who have a similar major with their roommates, this will be perfect. It is always nice to have a buddy to go into a class with and picking your classes together would be a great way to ensure a study partner! Even if you don’t share majors, you can still try to pick core classes together.
Coffee dates are always a really easy and convenient option for bonding. Grabbing coffee allows for you to get to know your new roommates in a relaxed and calm environment. It doesn’t have to be a long affair in case things go wrong, but in case you all have busy schedules, it can be a quick meetup.
Even when you go to orientation or take a tour while looking for schools, there is always something new to discover. Take a walk or a car ride around and get a chance to familiarize yourself with the layout while being able to get to know each other.
Some of my best bonding activities with my own roommates involved us decorating our room together. It is always fun to pick out linen and rugs. Also, you can get an opportunity to see what they are interested in and their taste.
Even if you paint Picasso pieces on accident, a painting class is a really cool way to get to know people and for those who are more shy, it can also distract you from getting lost in your head because you have to focus on what you are doing. Another great bonus, if you go to a painting class where you drink too, alcohol can loosen you up so you can have a good time. Just make sure you have a designated driver.
If getting out and partying is more your speed, one of the best bonding activities that I could recommend is going to a house party. It will also be a great way to meet other students as well. Having a night on the town is sure to be a hit for the whole gang! Just make sure that you all are being safe and responsible.
This might sound like a weird one, but it is another opportunity for you and your roommates to get to know each other. It is one of those activities that you have to do anyway, so why not make it fun and beneficial?
Especially in the beginning of the year, schools will typically have events for students to introduce them to the campus and create environments for people to get to know each other. It would be a great idea to take advantage of those events with your roommates.
Playing board games or cards games are endless fun bonding activities. They are a great way to get people laughing and having a good time without having to go out if you don’t want to. They also provide hours worth of entertainment if you don’t know how to pass the time.
Bonding activities that are personal can go a long way to making your roommates feel like they could have a lifelong friend in you. Pay attention to the things they say, the interests they share, and what they like to do. If you know they love to get manicures and pedicures, offer to go with them one time. It’s the little things that count and make the difference!
