10 Best Ways To Spend Your Free Time That Is Not Social Media

Social media is the easiest way to spend your free time. No matter how much free time you have, where you are, or who you are with.  It is so simple to pick up your phone, click on an app, and voila. Another world of social interaction, where you can be who you want to be and hang out with your friends. Since the government declared a National Emergency shelter-in-place, everyone across the globe has been glued to their screens. Checking their social media minimum of three times, daily. While many people are, without a doubt, spending their free time watching or reading their screens, many others are spending their free time partaking in other activities. Such activities include baking, cooking new recipes, doing some at-home workouts, meditating, having movie marathons, playing with their dog or cat(s), binge-watching a series, and stretching. Some people are even taking up the opportunity and using their free time to take naps. Let’s be honest, we all could use a little more sleep. Those are all great ideas, but what if the activities were a little more creative and interesting? To give you a better insight, here are some interesting ways you can spend your free time that is not on social media.

1. Dance

Dance! Whether you are by yourself or not, turn on the music, blast it to ten (or maybe 7 or 8), and just start dancing! No one is around, and if they are who cares! You never had a problem with dancing by yourself in a too-crowded space at a bar or club. Why have a problem with dancing by yourself in your own house? If you want, dance with your dog. I am sure they would not mind jumping around or spinning in circles for a couple of minutes, or hours.

2. DIY Projects

Remember that DIY project you wanted to work on? The one for your room that you said you didn’t have time to do before, because of work and the late hours they were having you work. Well now that you are home and have all the time in the world, why not spend it on doing that exact DIY project? Take advantage of the free time you have and spend it by doing things you never would’ve had time to do before.

3. Practice Makeup

Pull out your eyeshadow, blush, highlighter, and bronzer palettes. Clean off ALL your makeup brushes. Go on Google or Pinterest. Search for some crazy, weird, Halloween, themed, or create your own out-of-this-world makeup look. Now get to work and try it! Yes! You may make a mess. Yes! You will undoubtedly mess up. If not, then props to you for getting it on the first try. Yes! You will be in your bathroom or bedroom (wherever you do your makeup) for a long time. This may be your first time experimenting with a new look on yourself, using makeup. If it is, I promise you will have fun. If it isn’t, then you already know that some weird and beautiful magic will occur. No matter what new look you decide to practice and try, I guarantee you will like the results. No matter if it was on point or way off, and if you don’t like how it turned out, there is the sweet gift of makeup remover. Wash it off. Start fresh and try it again, or try another look. What better way to spend your free time than trying something new? Also, be sure to take a picture of the finished results. You will thank me for this later.

4. Clean and Reorganize

Get a head start on your spring cleaning! With so much free time on your hands why not go ahead and clean your bedroom, apartment, or house. Mop and sweep the floors, dust all the hard surfaces, wipe clean the foggy mirrors, and scrub your baseboards. Lord knows those things have not been touched since you moved in. Spending your free time cleaning and reorganizing is not a bad way to spend your free time. When you are finally allowed to host that party or have family over, you best believe the cleaning will pay off.

5. Redecorate

Everybody goes through little spurts of wanting to change things in their bedroom, apartment, or house. Whether it is the color of the room(s), the seating furniture, shelving, wall décor, or the layout of the entire room(s). I go through this at least once every year, and right now I am in the middle of redecorating. I got the time, so why not? Same for you too. If you have time, which I know you do, why not use it and rearrange or redecorate your room(s)? Not only will the time pass by quicker, but you will not have to worry about having time for it later.

6. Read A Book

Reading a book never hurt anyone. If anything, it made the time go by faster for them. It is not that hard to become engrossed in a good book. I am sure if you could think of a book you have been wanting to read but have not had the time to do so, you would read it after you swore you finished with your task: a work project, or anything else that keeps you busy. Well, you are not busy now. So go pick it up and get to reading. You will get a lot more entertainment out of that than on social media. This I promise.

7. Enjoy The Weather In Your Backyard

I know that the government is telling everyone to stay indoors and to limit their travels only when needing groceries. However, staying inside your house all day long does not mean you cannot go outside in your backyard. It is not open to the public. It is private property. So why not get some fresh air instead of staying indoors literally all day? The fresh air will not kill you if that is what you were thinking. It is springtime. The weather is beautiful. You can drink your cup of coffee while sitting outside in the sun, in your pajamas, and wrap yourself in a blanket. You can set up a blanket, pack a basket with all your favorite snacks and sandwiches, and have yourself a lunch picnic. You can even throw the ball around for your dogs in the backyard. I am sure they won’t say no to that. Spend your free time in the fresh and open air. You can’t go out in public and enjoy the sun, but you can soak it all up in your backyard.

8. Clean Out Closet

Clean out your closet that is filled with one-too-many-shirts. Sort through your 20 pairs of jeans. Do you really wear every single one? It is spring cleaning time, which does not exclude that closet of yours. When was the last time you wore your high school cheer uniform? Are you ever going to wear your prom dress again? If you have not worn it within the past six months or year, you will likely never wear it again. Take advantage of this time you have, and clean out your closet. How else will you make room for the soon-to-come new Easter dresses and pastel blouses?

9. Model Your Clothes

Now that your closet is cleaned out, it is time to put the rest of the clothes back in their designated drawers and rack. But before you do, why not make a couple of outfits out of them and start your own model runway show? Carrie Bradshaw did it, and look at how much fun she had.

10. Apply For Jobs/Build Up Resume

I know it is not the most exciting way to spend your free time, but it is profitable. If you are looking for a job use your free time and apply. Grocery stores and medical facilities are in desperate need of hiring more employees. Try applying there. If you already have a job, it doesn’t hurt to build up your resume. Check and see if you can make some improvements to it. Again, I know it is not ideal, but it is a useful way of spending your free time.
