Best Trends From The Fall/Winter 2020 Runways

Fall and Winter 2020 runway shows gave us a lot to think about this year. From the biggest coats we’ve seen to the sleekest leathers on the market, f/w 2020 runway season is a must-discover if you’re looking for some fashion inspiration.

As we finally begin to leave the house again and the weather is getting a little cooler, it’s time to get excited about our fall wardrobes. If you are looking for some fashion guidance or just want to see what creative juices got our favorite designers through quarantine, take a look at the top 7 Fall/Winter 2020 trends in fashion.

1. Oversized Coats

After a long few months in quarantine, people are ready to leave the house no matter what the weather. So with winter approaching, coats are a must obtain. Continuing on years’ past trajectory, the BIG coats are still in the game. Fall 20/21 runways were full of oversized overcoats. From Tommy Hilfiger’s wearable patchwork to the Balenciaga cape and everywhere in between, coats of all shapes, sizes and colors are in this year.

2. Collared Coats

Coats weren’t the only big things on the runway this season, but their collars too! From trench coats to tweed jackets, coat collars were a stand out in terms of 2020 trends. The collards came in a variety of colors and materials to account for each brand’s personal aesthetic. Chanel stuck with its usual scheme of sophisticated feminine as light colored collared coats walked the runway, Celine brought a strong a-line collared leather, and Akris sported a wool coat with lapels large enough to create a new block of color.

3. Bold and Boxy Colors

Color block nation this fall! From small colorful patterns to huge boxes of color, accents of pinks, blues, reds and oranges (among many, many others!) made their way into countless runway shows. Akris never fails to show perfectly patterned pieces, this year is no different- the colorful floor length coat brough all things ‘2020 trends’ into its walk. Jamie Wei Huang created a blue corduroy jacket with pink lining and pink bottom half, too. And even Chanel introduced some bright color blocks in the sweater of pink, blue white and gold! Jackets and sweaters were not the only pieces to get some color blocking attention this year, but bags too were a colorful phenomenon.

4. Earthy Tones

Fall always calls for a step into nature, so our clothes better match! Earthy tones, especially burnt oranges and reds, were one of the most popular 2020 trends. The typical fall and other Earthy colors were shown on gowns, capes, coats and shirts. With some feelings of the wild west- like Tommy Hilfiger’s leather, patched, cowgirl-like ensemble, homages to the 90s oversized blazer- shown in Jamie Wei Huang’s collection, and a seemingly close replica to Little Red Riding Hood running through the woods- with Celine’s Earthy cape, dress and boot combo, the tones of the season are natural and raw.

5. Puffy Sleeves

Big coats, big collars, what’s next, you might ask? Big. Sleeves. The sleeves this season are a 2020 trend hard to miss. Puffed sweaters- beautifully displayed in the Fendi collection, poofy-sleeved dresses- as seen in Chanel’s take on the little black dress, wide arm coats, and a few other big sleeve moments are going to be crucial to soon-to-be-seen fall 2020 trends. A puffy sleeve is definitely a statement maker, and it made its statement heard countless times this season. No matter if the sleeves start with strong shoulders or bloom out halfway down the arm, puffy sleeves are a unique touch we haven’t seen for some time, now found on many basic pieces.

6. Leathers

Spring 2020 and Fall 202 alike, leathers are a basic this year no matter what the season. In the spring we saw countless examples of spring leathers and even some for summer, too. The trend is transcending temperature barriers once again and moving back into the fall. Seen in deep blacks, warm browns, and some other colors too, leather just might be the material of the year. Balenciaga brought this 2020 trend into action with a pair of stark leather pants seamlessly evolving into leather boots below. J Brand showed off a classic and simple leather jacket that can be worn by anyone. And Fendi fearlessly walked an all leather look- the coat, skirt, boots and bag all included in the leather trend.

7. Unisex

Unisex and androgynous clothing has been gaining momentum over the last couple of years. Many brands dipped their toes in the concept while others dove in head first. Either way, including gender neutral, unisex, and androgynous styles into main collections is (and should be) the wave of the future. This season, Hedi Slimane has done it before, and he will do it again. His 2020 collection of men’s clothes were made available for women too. Many of the menswear looks- like the pinstripe suit with a polkadot bow- are very imaginable for a woman. To no surprise, Balenciaga acted in a similar way, as male models sported long gowns and capes fit for women or anyone else, too. And even simple outfits, like the basic jean and button up from J Brand, have obvious inspiration from both mens and womenswear.

Fall and winter 2020-2021 is a great time to get back into fashion. After being stuck inside for so long, with nowhere to go and no one to see, much of our fashion sense was forgotten. But it’s time to put it back to good use. Fall 2020 has countless new trends to try out, some old ones to keep honing in on, and many ways to ever so slightly change up your own wardrobe to be totally in style this year. So grab a puffy coat to stay warm, don’t be afraid to mix colors (especially those typically fall ones), and dress in whatever clothes you feel most confident in. This season is a great way to solidify your favorite 2020 trends and make them work regardless of the occasion.
