With the tourism industry on the rise, travel apps are becoming more and more ubiquitous. As such, it’s becoming harder and harder as a consumer to discern the best ones from the trashy ones. These seven apps, however, fall squarely in the best category. They are incredibly useful and will heavily aid the process, getting you to your destination funner and faster. So, go ahead and download these best travel apps to make your getaway even better!

1. TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor is an essential tool for every type of modern traveler. Not only does it show you popular tourist attractions, restaurants and hotels in whatever city of your choosing, it also lets other travelers comment on them and rate them. And don’t think it’s solely for the big cities; TripAdvisor lists information for the smallest of towns as well, meaning you can always know what’s available nearby wherever you go. A must-have for anyone planning a vacation.

2. Expedia

Expedia is a classic travel website focused on flights and hotels. Even today, in app form, it’s still useful for buying airline tickets, finding hotels and getting extraordinary deals on both of those things. Look out for their hotel and flight bundles; they’re truly out of this world cheap!

3. Wikipedia

Didn’t expect this one, eh? Wikipedia is good for the traveler in search of a basic culture guide. By clicking on a location’s culture subheading, one can learn essential info to prepare themselves for a vastly different area than what they’re used to, lessening the impact of culture shock. Not to mention that knowing a bit of a location’s history and culture is a good idea for understanding the locals anyway.

4. Waze

The GPS app that does more than just give directions. Waze is a connected network where individuals place alerts of dangers such crashes and heavy traffic so you’re experience on the road is not just safer, but smarter too. First created in Israel, where it is still popular, Waze is available all around the world. A definite recommendation for those traveling with or by car.

HotelTonight is not the only hotel room booking app out there but its focus on savings and finding the best deal for your time frame makes it one of the most notable. Check it out if you want a nice room and you want it for cheap!

6. AirBnb

Ok, unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know how AirBnb works. As a lodging tool, its usefulness is well-received by those who want to travel cheap, or couldn’t find a hotel or hostel to their liking. Hey, there’s nothing more authentic than someone’s apartment, right? These are just a few of the best travel apps out there.

7. Duolingo

If you’re going somewhere where the main language spoken isn’t English, do not panic. Duolingo offers short, fun lessons on the basic vocabulary, grammar and spelling of the language of your choice. As of this writing, lessons are available in at least thirty different languages from French to Mandarin Chinese to even Klingon! Enjoy the apps fun games, bizarre example sentences and you’ll be ready to converse in no time.
