Every city seems to be known for a specific item of food. For New York, it is pizza and cheesecake. In Philadelphia, the staple food is the cheesesteak. While Pat’s and Geno’s are often the places people think of first, there are other places that are less known to tourists that still make incredible cheesesteaks. Here are the 5 best places to get a Philly cheesesteak in Philadelphia!

1. Down Home Diner

This diner is located within Reading Terminal Market and if you blink, you miss it when walking around. It is tucked away in a corner in the market, and its cheesesteak is even more of a hidden secret. The fresh ingredients make this cheesesteak shine with deliciousness. There are other places that have cheesesteaks as well, so make multiple trips to try them all!

2. Hard Rock Café

While this is a more of a touristy spot than the other places on the list, it is probably one of the least-suspecting places to get a good cheesesteak. They have a menu that consists of local favorites at participating restaurants, and their Market Street, Philadelphia location fittingly has cheesesteaks. For a chain, their cheesesteaks are super authentic to what Philadelphia is known for.

 

3. John’s Roast Pork

John’s Roast Pork may be known worldwide for their roast pork, they are home to the “ultimate cheesesteak.” For those in your party who do not want a cheesesteak, they offer a wide variety of items. They are located on Snyder Avenue and can be accessed by bus if needed.

4. Steve’s Prince of Steaks

Steve’s has three locations in Philadelphia: one in Center City on 16th Street, one on Bustleton Avenue in Bustleton, and one on Comly Road in Comly. Their Center City location now offers curbside service and delivery, which allows for an easy break from studying late at night. The offer a variety of cheesesteaks made of chicken or beef as well as a variety of other items.

5. Joe’s Steaks and Soda Shops

Joe’s Steaks and Soda Shops have locations in on Torresdale Avenue in Torresdale as well as a location in Fishtown. Their Torresdale shop opened up in 1949 as “Chink’s Steaks” but was renamed in 2013, and their Fishtown location was built in 2015. They are known for their retro feel and for their cheesesteaks, shakes, and fountain sodas.
