Documentaries are great informative ways to learn new things on different issues. Here are our favourite 8 documentaries to watch on Netflix right now.

1. Period. End of Sentence.

Period. End of Sentence. is a documentary highlighting the stigma surrounding periods in India. It follows a group of women in Hapur as they learn how to make sanitary pads which they can sell to other women in their village at affordable prices. Through making these products, the women aim to break the taboo surrounding periods, as well as improving the hygiene by making the products more accessible. It won an Academy Award for best documentary, and is a must watch for everyone to realise how so many women are still struggling for access to period products.

2. RBG

RBG is an inspiring documentary about the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, solidifying her place as one of the most important feminist icons in history. It explores her life and career, focusing on different aspects of her life including her college education, how she met her husband, as well as the different cases she fought to create equality between the sexes within US law. This is a must-watch to see how RBG became a pop culture icon and is an inspiring depiction of her life.

3. The True Cost

The True Cost is a  shocking documentary which explores the impacts of fast fashion. It highlights different aspects of the garment making industry, and who pays the price for our clothes. This documentary explores environmental, social and psychological aspects of the clothing industry, and helps to make the connection about where our clothes come from. This is definitely a must-see for any clothes lover.

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a documentary which explores the impact of animal agriculture on the environment. It looks at various environmental problems facing our planet and considers animal agriculture’s contribution to these. Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, this documentary is an important discussion on one of the major ways we can save the planet.

5. Blackfish

Blackfish focuses on the life of the orca Tilikum who has taken the lives of several people since being in captivity. It discusses the controversy over holding killer whales, and the unpredictability of Tilikum in particular. It highlights how Tilikum’s aggression originated from being held in captivity and argues how holding killer whales in captivity lowes their life expectancy. This is a difficult documentary to watch but an interesting discussion on animals being kept in captivity.

6. Minimalism

Minimalism is a documentary that explores the benefits of minimalism, focusing on the lives of the narrators Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. It explores how our lives are geared towards consumerism and constantly feeling like we need to fill a void. This documentary also explores how minimalism is possible for people living different lifestyles. This is such an interesting documentary highlighting how living with less can give you more purpose in life.

He Named Me Malala is an inspiring documentary exploring the life of Malala. It follows her life before and after the attack by the Taliban. It discusses the significance of her name, the impact of her father, and how she has become a voice for girls who don’t have access to education. The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson explores the mystery surrounding the death of Marsha, as well as her impact as a trans activist.
