If you have dry, frizzy hair like I do, you know that hair masks are our holy grail. They bring our hair back to life after we tear it down with straighteners and curlers. Coconut oil can be mixed with different ingredients to get different results for your hair. Here’s a list of the ten best DIY coconut oil hair masks – with things you probably already have at home.
Honey naturally attracts moisture, and thus is the perfect component to add to a hair mask.
Hair masks are not an exact science, so base your portions on how much hair you have. I like to do two tablespoons of each ingredient. For this honey mask, warm up two tablespoons of honey and two tablespoons of coconut oil, then apply all over your hair. It’ll act as a deep conditioning treatment, and the longer you keep it in, the more work it does.
Avocado contains several natural oils that can help nourish dry hair.
In order to make this nourishing hair mask, take an avocado from your kitchen table and mash it up in a blender. Add in your coconut oil and some heated water to turn the consistency liquid. And voila – you have nourished hair but your out of breakfast.
It doesn’t just work on burns.
Aloe Vera promotes hair growth, so for us out there who are never satisfied with the length of their hair, this is something you should try. Mix in aloe vera gel with coconut oil, and make sure to apply most of this mask directly to the root.
Disgusting to drink, but the benefits are undeniable.
Apple cider vinegar strengthens the hair and promotes anti-breakage. Split ends are a problem of the past with apple cider vinegar – mix in a tablespoon of the vinegar with another of coconut oil and apply to the hair. For better results in terms of removing split ends, do this one on a more regular basis.
The only ingredient in this mask is our main star – coconut oil.
Leaving in coconut oil overnight (about eight-nine hours) will do a full job of nourishing and replenishing your dry hair. When you wash it out, make sure to be thorough to ensure your hair is not greasy the next day.
Added bonus; this mask creates the best curls ever!
Yes, we are using more breakfast ingredients in our hair.
Egg yolks are filled with vitamins that strengthen and repair damaged hair. Vitamins A and E, and minerals such as folate all help hair grow and stay healthy.
Whisk one egg with as much coconut oil as you feel necessary, and then brush through your hair. Make sure to rinse properly to avoid having any egg residue.
Castor oil helps hair avoid being dry and frizzy, and is also used to help hair growth.
Strawberries excel at just about everything.
With high levels of Vitamin C, strawberries help hair regulate its natural pH balance, and avoid super oily scalps. Mash a handful of strawberries into a blender with coconut oil and a touch of honey, and you’ve got yourself a strawberry hair mask (and a smoothie).
Packed with tons of vitamins and minerals, yogurt helps hair stay strong and replenishes dead ends. Add in some apple cider vinegar to really bring the mask together.
And remember – use a probiotic yogurt.
Bananas pretty much do everything I’ve mentioned in all the other hair masks. They nourish, replenish, and fight dead ends. Mash some ripe bananas in with coconut oil, and watch the magic happen.
