Evolution – 201 E Vine St, Salisbury, MD 21804.

This brewery known now to locals simply as Evo was started by two brothers. One had a passion for beer and the other a passion for food. Their pub & craft brewery has been a big hit since opening its doors in 2012. Also on-site is a tasting room, and brewery tours are offered Friday through Sunday.

My pick: Lot #3, an American-style IPA that is aggressively hopped at a rate of over 2 lb. per barrel. Big notes of citrus and pine complement a reserved but firm malt backbone.

Rubber Soul – 213 West Main Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Born from a love of bicycles, the Beatles, and beer, this brewery has recently expanded into making canned beer for distribution.

My pick: Paceline, a citrusy session swiller. “Like a smooth moving line of riders, this session IPA sets the pace to get you where you’re going.”

Tall Tales – 6929 Heron Grove Court, Parsonsburg, MD 21849.

This brewery began in 2011 with a commitment to provide exceptional beer in an ecologically responsible manner.

My pick: The Red Headed Step Child, a dark red Irish red ale with some roasty overtones and a subtle, apple/fruity finish.

Burley Oak – 10016 Old Ocean City Blvd., Berlin MD 21811.

Burley Oak uses sustainable practices and utilizes local materials and craftsmen. Their goal is to produce distinctive beers whose quality is unsurpassed using new and traditional brewing methods.

My pick: Waffle Stomper, an IPA created with Belgian yeast and American hops.

RaR Brewing – 504 Poplar Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Their slogan is “local boys brewing local beers.” They built the brewery in an 80-year-old former pool hall and bowling alley with the goal of maintaining the building’s history while producing well-balanced American brews 10 barrels at a time.

My pick: Out of Order, a double Blueberry @ 4.2%, brewed with massive amounts of blueberries and lactose. The flavor on this takes you back with huge notes of Minute Maid grape Icees, blue raspberry slush puppies, and grape pop rocks.

OC Brewing Co. – 5509 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, MD 21842.

OC Brewing Company is family owned and operated. It started as a dream of running a craft brewery but then blossomed into a large scale brewery, bar, & restaurant.

My pick: Nuckin’ Futs, an English Brown Ale that has a rich nutty flavor, sweetened with fresh local honey, and balanced with a spicy hop note. Very smooth and enjoyable.

Fin City Brewing – 12913 Ocean Gateway, Ocean City, MD 21842.

Fin City is the oldest brewery in the resort town of Ocean City. The brewery and the beers it creates are named in homage to the sport fishing industry that is popular there.

My pick: Blackfin Black, a full-bodied black IPA brewed with pale and mild roasted malts and a citrus hop blend. A well balanced roasty-sweet backbone and a smooth finish with a floral, citric hoppiness.

Backshore Brewing – 913 Atlantic Avenue, Ocean City, Maryland 21842.
