Most people claim to be experts at their beauty routine, or have developed one that they say ‘works for them’ unconditionally, but how many people actually know what sort of routine to follow for their type of skin? Oily and mixed skin types are the ones that require a special kind of attention and are quite challenging to manage, so the products you are meant to use for them are also specific. Here is the best beauty routine you need to follow for oily and mixed skin types!
So, if you have never looked it up, what oily-skinned women have to deal with is basically having larger oil glands and high sebum content These oil glands are located just under the skin’s surface and the sebum is simply an oily substance made of fats. Things like genetics, hormone changes, and stress can increase sebum production and even cause your skin to breakout. This means that you would need to find products that lessen the oil activity but also keep your skin hydrated.
The deal with combination skin is that some areas of your face are oily and some are dry (typically the t-zone is the area that is oily) and what you need to do is essentially balance out two different skin types. However, you’re not using a beauty routine for oily and for dry skin, but you’re using one that is specially tailored to your combination skin type.
You should always start your beauty routine with a cleansing gel in the morning and at night. In oily skin cases, oil breeds bacteria which leads to breakouts, so you should always wash your face morning and night. The more oil, the more breeding ground for spots. You should aim to cut the oil but you don’t want your skin to dry out so be careful of the products you use.
For combination skin, you should look for cleansing gels or foams that balance out the oil and dryness of your face perfectly. Ideally, your cleanser would effectively remove impurities without leaving the skin feeling tight or dry nor greasy.
In the morning and in the evenings, you should make it your habit to always use a toner. It helps remove excess dirt, traves of oil, make-up, it controls acne, and it balances the pH of y0ur skin. It is best to look for alcohol-free ones for oily skin, while for combination skin you need a simple balancing one. Do not skip this step in your beauty routine!
Well-formulated toners really help out to manage oiliness and especially for mixed skin types, they will not make the dry areas drier nor the oily areas oilier. Ones which include witch hazel work wonders for both skin types.
Moisturising needs to happen in the morning and in the evenings. If your skin is oily you need to use an oil-free moisturiser. It can actually get oilier when it’s dehydrated as the skin itself will overcompensate for not receiving that moisture. Choose a light oil-free moisturiser with sodium PCA and glycerin as they will help your skin retain moisture.
For combination skin, the moisturisers you would need to use should be very lightweight. There are some very good products for your specific skin type that balance out the dryness and the oiliness of your skin accordingly.
You should never skip the sunscreen product in the mornings, no matter what your skin type is, even when you don’t think it is that sunny outside. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 80 per cent of the sun’s UV can pass through clouds, so you should aim to use it 365 days of the year, no matter rain or shine! Sun damage can does not happen overnight so don’t be too relaxed about not applying sunscreen.
It reduces ageing and it makes your skin look so much healthier! You may already be using foundations with SPF in their formula, but to be extra cautious do still use a normal face sunscreen!
For oily and mixed skin look for zinc oxide sunscreens because they will leave a more matte finish to your skin.
Face serums are skincare products that you should apply to your skin but before moisturising at night. The serum is made of special molecules that penetrate deeply into the skin and delivers a high concentration of active ingredients. They are great for keeping your skin looking youthful and bright!
Using face serums at night is an essential step to maintaining healthy skin.
For oily skin, look for products which include salicylic acid and tea tree oil, since they are great for acne-prone skin, which also works for mixed skin too. If you are acne-prone look for vitamin C, zinc, retinol, and salicylic acid in your serums!
Pro tip: store your serums in a cool, dry place and use it within six months to a year, since they do tend to expire much faster than you would expect!
Make it a habit to use a mask and exfoliate once a week! It works best to do the mask after exfoliating your face since the exfoliator would remove dead skin cells and perhaps leave your face feeling dry.
Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for new ones every 30 days or so, but sometimes they don’t shed completely which results in dry, flaky patches and clogged pores, which is exactly why you should exfoliate. Make sure you use a moisturising face mask afterwards, in order to avoid that dryness and inflammation of the skin.
This step in your beauty routine will leave your skin looking brighter and it can help it reduce breakouts!
