Best Activities To Do Under Self-Quarantine

Since the coronavirus pandemic spread in the United States a few months ago, people have taken drastic measures to shield themselves from the virus. Self-quarantine has become the chosen option to ward off the pandemic for a short period of time until a vaccine is made. During this time, there are plenty of activities to do with the free time we have been given. Here is a list of activities to do in the era of social-distancing.

1. Play Games

Playing board games is one of the best activities to do with family members during self-quarantine. Games like Risk, Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit are perfect games to entertain, but they also help us use our minds. For instance, chess and Scrabble are games of strategy, you have to make an educated move for you to win the game. These games make these moments of social-distancing peaceful.

If you are experiencing cabin-fever, you can play in your backyard while no one else is outside. There are multiple games you can play outside, like badminton, soccer or you could play with your dogs. These games are also making social-distancing tolerable. If you are not an outdoorsy person, there are also video games like Just Dance or Godzilla Save the Earth you can play on your video game consoles.

There are also video games that you can play with family members like Star Wars Battlefront, Just Dance or Mario Smash Bros. If you prefer other video games, you could also play Lego Star Wars or buy a Jackbox TV Bundle for your gaming console. There are other ways to stave off cabin-fever, if you are bored with playing games, whether they are independent or family-related activities.

2. Read Novels

Reading hard-copy or paperback books is one of the best independent activities to do in times of social distancing. Reading is the best way to escape from reality, especially when you are reading books by J.R.R. Tolkien or George R.R. Martin. With so much free time, you can delve back into the imaginative realm of fantasy, science fiction or historical fiction. You could also read book series like His Dark Materials, A Song of Ice and Fire, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Reading books of poetry and plays is one of a few independent activities to do under self-quarantine. If you are not a fan of classic novels, you can enjoy books of poetry and plays. Poetry collections are a good way to start. If you have a Barnes and Noble A Treasury of Classic Poetry, you could start there, or you could read poems from the internet. The same is similar for plays.

If you like Shakespeare, you could read a compilation of his works. There are also other playwrights you can delve into like the twisted tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. When everyone is under self-quarantine, you do not always have to read a book. You can also watch your favorite movies and TV series with your family.

3. Watch Movies and TV Series

Watching movies is one of multiple activities to do when you want to spend time with your family members. Movies, just like reading, is the best way to escape from reality and into a world of fantasy. For instance, my family and I are currently watching the Lord of the Rings extended version during our self-quarantine. If you have a movie series like Harry Potter, you should watch it during this time. We do not know how long we will be under self-quarantine, so you should make the most of it. If you have streaming services like Hulu or Netflix, you can also watch movies you do not have in your movie library.

Watching TV series is similar to watching movies, it is one of the multiple activities to do with family members who enjoy particular shows like Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials, Bold Type, or American Horror Story. For instance, my parents and I enjoy watching Game of Thrones, while my sister and I like to watch American Horror Story. If you have streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, you can also watch TV series you do not have in your TV library like The Witcher, Outlander or Demon Slayer (Kimetsu No Yaiba). There are also other fun activities to do in the era of social distancing: like writing stories, poems and fan-fiction.

4. Write Stories and Fan-fiction

Writing stories is one of the best activities to do by yourself, besides reading. Writing requires your imaginative abilities, a plot, characters, setting, conflict, and dialogue. You can also find influence in other writers, or movies, but you should not copyright their writing. Copyrighting another person’s work is still a crime even when we are under self-quarantine, so do not attempt it. There are other fields of writing if you are not interested in writing stories, you could write a few poems. For instance, I wrote two poems in the first two weeks of quarantine. Unlike writing your own stories, writing fan-fiction is completely different.

Fan-fiction, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary, is a fiction that is written by a fan that features characters from particular books, movies and TV shows. Writing fan-fiction is another good activity to do by yourself. Unlike writing your own stories, you are writing stories about your favorite characters like Harry Potter. You can invest your time in writing or reading fan-fiction based on whatever genre you desire. One of the best sites to delve into fan-fiction is fanfiction.net. If you do not have an account, you can log on for free without any expenses on your account.
