9 Beauty Trends From The 1960’s That Are Still Stylish
The 1960’s was full of iconic beauty trends that have managed to make a comeback in the last year or so. There are so many fun makeup looks, clothing styles, and hairstyles that still hold up almost sixty years later. Here are nine beauty trends from the ‘60s that are still stylish and easily replicable!
1. Neutral Lips
By the 1960’s, the big, bold, bright lips had been retired and the new style was neutral lip colors. Nude, coral, light pink, and even orange were all popular shades of lipstick and lip liner. Beauty icons of the ‘60s such as Sharon Tate would often not even apply anything to their lips, preferring to keep things more natural.
Nude and pale lipsticks are definitely still in style even today, and you can copy that look by simply opting for a lip color that is similar to your natural one, or by going with something subtle and neutral over a bright, bold color.
2. Miniskirts
Beauty trends also encompass fashion, and in 1964, miniskirts were the height of fashion and style. Invented (or simply given an official name) that same year by Mary Quant, miniskirts were popular back then and are still just as popular now.
Before the ‘60s, longer skirts and dresses were much more in style. The rise of the miniskirt, however, marked a new era of fashion for women. It’s a trend that has lasted through the years and gained even more traction than ever in 2022. The miniskirt look is very simple and has also been given a more modern twist with the new colors and cuts that are being sold in stores currently.
3. Dramatic Eyelashes
This is often one of the first beauty trends that people think of when ‘60s style and makeup is mentioned. The bold, dramatic eyes were a very popular look, and this especially includes the lashes.
The big look was to have very heavy mascara on the bottom lashes and quite a bit on the top lashes, as well. Fake eyelashes also became more commonly and popularly used during the 1960’s, adding to the trend of dramatic and defined eye makeup.
4. High-waisted Bikinis
High-waisted bikini bottoms were one of the major beauty trends of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. Swimwear was becoming more about style and less about function during these decades, and this look was extremely popular back then. High-waisted bikinis still dominate the bathing suit market today.
This is a very flattering and iconic shape, and it’s one that has managed to stay in style for decades. Not many trends can say they’ve lasted this long, but this is one that has carried over from the ‘60s and is still incredibly fashionable.
5. Cool-toned Eyeshadow
During the ‘60s, pale and cool colors were very popular in eyeshadow palettes. It was common to match the shade of your eyeshadow to your actual eye color, so there were lots of blues, greens, and even light browns being used.
Even white was a trendy eyeshadow color, and similarly to blue and green, these shades would have a matte finish to them. Many would add black eyeshadow to their creases, too, to define the eye shape even more. This is a makeup look that has been making a comeback, and these cool-toned palettes are still very much in style.
6. Faux Freckles
For a large majority of the 20th century, freckles were viewed as unwanted blemishes and skin imperfections. However, during the 1960’s, beauty icons were embracing freckles and even creating fake ones when they didn’t have them naturally.
Style icons would create faux freckles on their face with makeup, and women all over would replicate this look. This beauty trend came back during the ‘90s for a while, and it’s making a comeback currently, as well. Over the past couple years, faux freckles have been very popular again and people all over have been trying to get this stylish look.
7. Winged & White Eyeliner
Near the end of the 1950’s, winged eyeliner was becoming one of the most popular beauty trends and it stayed that way throughout the 1960’s. Many people were doing bold, winged liner looks to define their eyes as much as possible, and cat-eyes were also super common and stylish. Some would
This look is definitely very popular right now, and the bold eyeliner/cate-eye look has made a huge comeback over the past few years.
White eyeliner was also very popular in the ‘60s, and it was usually worn right behind the black eyeliner to create depth and a more dramatic look. White eyeliner is definitely still in style, and fun eyeliner in general is a popular makeup trend from our current decade.
8. Go-Go Boots
Those white, high go-go boots from the ‘60s were one of the biggest fashion trends to come out the decade. These are very reminiscent of that era, and they’ve been making a comeback lately. These boots are still very stylish and can be found all over the place.
Much like other beauty trends from the ‘60s, go-go boots were popular again for a while during the ‘90s, so it makes sense that they’re trending right now, too.
9. The “Natural” Look
Most of the beauty trends from the 1960’s, at least in terms of makeup, can be summarized by simply leaning more towards the natural look of the face. Excess blush and foundation was very unpopular, and bright lip and eye colors were not in style. Many opted for cooler tones and would go with light pinks and neutrals over bold reds.
This move towards natural-looking makeup has been huge over the past few years, and many prefer to subtly accentuate the features they already have rather than using lots of makeup to change things about their face. The ‘60s definitely helped create this beauty trend.
