Halloween is a great time of the year not only because it’s an excuse to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and eat too much candy, but because it gives us an opportunity to dress up as the women we both love and revere. Whether these women are fictional or real, they’re definitely worthy of our appreciation. Ahead is a list of strong and independent women who have made impacts either on real society and their own fictional worlds. Halloween isn’t only a time to be goofy or dress sexy, you can also use this holiday as an opportunity to show your appreciation for strong females. Be the talk of your Halloween party when you show up dressed head to toe in a great costume that demonstrates the power of women. After all, that’s what Halloween is al about, right?
Rachel Green, Phoebe Buffay, Monica Geller, and Elaine Benes are all acceptable Halloween costumes that are easy to throw together at the last minute. These characters are quintessentially nineties, and, because these two shows are still relevant, everyone at the Halloween party will be delighted with your costume. What’s great about all four of these women is that throughout their shows, viewers see Rachel, Phoebe, Monica, and Elaine experience the highs and lows of their personal and professional lives. Through such experiences, viewers can appreciate the honesty and (often brutal) truth of living in the world as a female. Obviously, both Friends and Seinfeld are comedies, but they don’t hold back when addressing tough topics. These women are strong, courageous, and the perfect Halloween costumes. Tip: If you’re in a crunch for a costume, check your local thrift store for perfect ’90s pieces.
If we’re talking about Halloween costumes that are incredibly easy to put together, then dressing up as a member of Pussy Riot is at the top of the list. Pussy Riot is an all-girl, punk-rock group from Russia. The kicker? All the members wear ski masks over their faces. Because they protest against Russia’s strict ideologies, they use nicknames in an attempt to hide their identities. These girls are seriously badass as they gained notoriety by staging political performances and writing songs like “Kill The Sexist” and “Mother of God, Drive Putin Away.” Because rock and roll is about breaking down boundaries and proving people (usually these people are men) wrong, dressing up as any female musician will work. Other totally badass rock and roll idols include Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, and Patti Smith.
Frida Kahlo was not only an artist, but she used her art to be an activist for women and Mexico. She used her art to explore such issues as identity, race, gender, sex, and class. Today, her art is as relevant and celebrated as it was in the thirties and forties. She was a women with ambition and immense talent, and she still stands as a Mexican heroine and inspiration for all artists. Because of her distinct personal style, dressing up at Frida Kahlo will earn you many kudos at any and all Halloween parties you attend.
Again, another easy costume to throw together. Rosie, the Riveter was an illustration used in WWII to represent all the hardworking women who left the comfort of their homes to work in factories and shipyards during the war. Rosie is a symbol of feminism and women’s role in the success of America. Women really stepped up during the war as men fled to the front lines. Women did their part to make sure the war was won on our terms. Rosie, the Riveter remains an important symbol today, as well. Throw on a bandana and a denim shirt and throw up your fist, and you’ve got an inspiring Halloween costume that’s gonna earn you major props.
Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen, Daria and Jane, Princess Leia, Elle Woods, Leslie Knope, Daenerys Targaryen. What do all these women have in common? Well, a few things: 1) They’re fictional; 2) They’re all totally badass; 3) They make perfect Halloween costumes! For the most part, these costumes are all fairly easy to put together. For instance, is you’re thinking of dressing up as Elle Woods, just wear all pink. Hermione? A plaid skirt, white button-down shirt, and a cardigan. Daenerys…well, you’re gonna need a blonde wig. All of these women embody ideal characteristics. They’re brave, smart, resourceful, and they all have killer fashion sense (I’m obviously talking about Leia’s buns). Theses female characters are so distinctive that everyone at the party will know who you’re dressed up as.
Will all the superhero movies that are constantly being released, there are tons of badass female superheroes you can choose from to dress up as. There’s the classic Wonder Woman, but there’s also Black Widow, Catgirl, Shuri, Captain Marvel, and Jean Grey. Maybe these costumes are a little harder to throw together, and you may need to start thinking about the key pieces to your costume sooner than the night before the party. But if you can pull it together, you’re gonna be the talk of the party. It’s no surprise why these ladies have made the list…they’re strong, independent, and (obviously) badass. Throw on some spandex, a cape, and a pair of killer boots, and you’re good to go (That’s good advice for life in general…).
The great part about this costume? You don’t even have to dress up. Just go as you are.
