With so many amazing female artists out there, it almost seems impossible to group these women down into a top ten. However, in celebration of these artists, we have created our own list of our top ten bad ass female artists, who we find extremely inspirational through their music, their style, their fundraising, and their personalities.
Since her career started in the early 2000’s on Disney with Hannah Montana, Miley has been in the spotlight since her early teens. Although Miley’s career started out predominantly as an acting one, in recent years she has focused on music and we are living for her pop and country mix of music. Not only is her music amazing, but she is not afraid to say, do or wear what she wants; and furthermore, she is a massive advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and has helped homeless teens through her own charity – can you get more bad ass than that?
Madonna is the original badass female icon, being the number one break out female star of the 1980’s thanks to her music and style, and she has managed to stay relevant up into the modern day. Back in the 1980’s, Madonna made extremely controversial statements that made her so famous, including the music videos of both Like A Virgin and Like A Prayer. Not only has Madonna had an amazing music career, but she has also had a very successful movie career, including the film Desperately Seeking Susan, after which she became a fashion icon for.
In recent years we have seen the rise of Cardi B, a female rapper who has taken the musical world by storm with her amazing albums and collaborations. Off the back of her amazing music career, Cardi has become a massive influencer of fashion – just look at her Met Gala and other red carpet outfits – and her fiery personality and hilarious sense of humour have helped her gain a place in our hearts.
Stevie Nicks has been around for a long time, her musical career starting in the 1970’s with Buckingham Nicks and then rising to fame with the famous rock band, Fleetwood Mac. Whilst in Fleetwood Mac, Stevie became famed for her dreamy vocals and boho, witchy style; which she has carried on through her musical career up until today, whether solo or still with Fleetwood Mac. Because of her infamous witch style and her ties to the Wicken religion, Stevie appeared on American Horror Story as herself – could you be more badass?
Similarly to Miley, Ariana Grande started out her career as a child actor on Nickelodeon where she was quite successful, and going into the 2010’s started her own music career which over time made her become much more famous, and then in 2018 – with the release of two albums and many amazing music videos and live performances- everyone went completely mad for Ariana, and we can all see why. This inspirational woman isn’t only one of the hardest working women in the music business at the moment, but she has overcome and helped out with the aftermath of a terrorist attack at her own concert which is more than amazing.
Since her arrival on the scene in 2010 with Superbass, Nicki Minaj has completely dominated the scene of female rap artists. Nicki’s career has been dominated by her outrageous lyrics and outfits, from the neon highlighter coloured outfits and wigs from her early career stages to the big bum glorifying lyrics of Anaconda. In 2017, she also paid the tuition fees for 30 of her fans, and if that isn’t one of the kindest and most badass things to do with your earning for your fans we don’t know what else is.
I mean, is there much else to say apart from just Beyonce? She is the Queen B and since her debut in Destiny’s Child, she has had the world wrapped around her little finger. With so many awards and albums under her arms its hard to count, Beyonce is one of the biggest icons in the world and it would be hard to find someone who doesn’t know her name – and if you aren’t already convinced of how badass she is, go and watch her show Homecoming on Netflix, which will convince you within the first 2 minutes.
Lorde’s new take on music, starting out with Royals in 2014, has been a breath of fresh air in the music industry, with her moody, electronic pop sound taking the world by storm. David Bowie himself called Lorde the future of music, and with that acclaim to your name, I don’t think there is anyone else who could beat how badass Lorde is.
Janelle Monae, who has been around since the early 2000’s, has had such a successful musical and acting career. Not only has she been extremely successful, but she has also become a massive advocate for women’s and more specifically LGBTQ+ rights, with her song Make Me Feel being a gay pride anthem for so many people – how badass is that?
Personally, on our list, Lady Gaga is the most badass female artist out there. Since day one of career Lady Gaga has been about self-love, acceptance, equality, and being 100% yourself – this which we have seen through Gaga’s amazing songs and outfits throughout the years. Not only has she had many awards for her musical career, but she has also won awards for her acting in lead roles in American Horror Story and A Star Is Born, as well as winning an Oscar for her music in the latter film.
