No matter what life throws your way, there are three things you can count on: death, taxes and doing something for the first time! Now, whether it be your first day at school, first part time job or even your first relationship, it undoubtedly comes hand-in-hand with a pile of nerves and rightly so! It’s new and unchartered territory for you and that can be scary. If you have started at university, you have likely found yourself in that same situation. When you are thrown in to the deep end and you are already nervously trying to learn everything as quickly as you can, mistakes, big or small, are bound to happen! Here are 20 mistakes every first year makes at Bond University!
We all know Don’s is a fun place and a great way to meet a whole lot of new people in your first semester. However, it can also be way too easy to fall into the trap of heading to Don’s the night before a big day of classes and skipping the next day.
After a big night out, the last thing you want to do is go to a two-hour lecture, right? Understandable. But this can also be a really easy way to get in to a bad habit of not ‘needing’ to attend your classes. Believe me, this is not a routine you want to get used to!
As university students, we are known for our lack of finances, yet it is so easy to be drawn to going out on a way too regular basis with friends. Whether it is brunch, lunch, dinner or dessert, it’s such a nice way to catch up with friends, isn’t it? Unfortunately, it is also the easiest way to watch your bank account suffocate at a terrifying rate.
We all know that Thursday night is Uni party night but for some of us, classes don’t end on a Thursday and so we are forced to decide whether to go out and suffer the consequences tomorrow, or play it safe and watch some Netflix before an early night!
One thing I have noticed on a few occasions since beginning university is that people enjoy a good debate. Now, this can be all well and good until it goes a little too far. People are all entitled to their own opinion, and most people can respect that, but just bear in mind to remember when a difference in opinion isn’t worth arguing (and potentially even losing a friendship) over.
When you start at a new school, job or university, it is totally understandable that you wouldn’t automatically know every classroom off-by-heart and heading to the wrong room is bound to happen at some point. Just be aware that everyone has been in that same situation and would be more than happy to help you out. Don’t be afraid to ask!
If you live on campus, it can be very easy to rush to class and forget to grab your keys on the way out to lock your door. Most days that would be fine, but on cleaning day, it’s another story! Sure, you can go down to security and get them to let you in, but after a few times they’ll be annoyed that you did it again.
Sure, eating dinner around 6 O’clock is probably ideal, but you’ll learn pretty quickly that if you don’t want to line up for your dinner every single night you might need to change your routine. Try going half an hour earlier or around 7pm to avoid the peak rush.
At Bond University, we are lucky enough to have such a variety of clubs and societies to get involved with. It is a great way to make friends and get involved with something unrelated to your course but still within the university community. Whether you are into sports, music or anything in between, there will definitely be a club for you!
You have come to university to learn, so why not make the most of the teachers and people who are knowledgable in your future field? You have paid a lot of money to be here so you deserve to be able to ask as many questions as you need to to make the most of this university.
If you have moved away from home to come to Bond University, you have likely left your parent’s cooking. It is not until you have been living off bra food for weeks on end that you realise how amazing a home-cooked meal really is. When the holidays come around, and you head home, you’ll probably have a long list of things you want to have for dinners when you’re back!
As I mentioned earlier, it is very easy to burn through your cash and so it is a good idea to look for a casual position with a few shifts a week. This is a good way to keep your bank account happy and be able to take part in the social side of uni with your friends!
Like missing a home-cooked meal from your mum, you may miss not having to schedule your own laundry! It is so easy to get caught up in life and forget about the ever-mounting pile of dirty clothes in your room. Try and schedule one hour of your week to set aside for laundry and this will help you never run out of clean clothes!
We’ve all done it- stocking up on snacks and having brunch on the daily. Unfortunately, money doesn’t last forever, even if it’s in the form of your ID card which, somehow, doesn’t even feel like real money at all. Try and work out how much money you have for each day so you can budget and not run out before the end of semester!
Along with joining a club or society, it is important to keep up with hobbies and not just put all your time and effort in to your degree. Take a break from the semester stress and spend some time on your hobbies. It doesn’t matter whether it’s reading a book, swimming, or heading to the gym, just make sure you set aside time to do that.
Like I mentioned with spending all your dining money, instead of buying all your snacks at the on-campus stores you can easily get to one of the local shopping centres and buy your snack foods from the supermarkets for a much more reasonable price- plus there’s more options!
In this modern day and age we are living in, most communication is done through online technology. University is no exception, with most updates, and conversations with tutors outside of class, taking place over email. Checking your Bond University on a regular basis is very important to ensure you don’t miss you on vital information!
As a student studying an undergraduate degree at Bond University, along with undertaking the Core subjects throughout your course, you are also required to collate a minimum of 100 Beyond Bond points before you graduate. You can get this through reflections on extra-curricular activities, and it is actually a really insightful way to learn how each thing you do is benefitting you.
The Bond Gym is a thing of pure beauty. At the beginning of every semester you swear you are going to visit on a very regular basis, but time passes and you realise you haven’t been for the past few weeks. Make time in your schedule, and make it a priority!
The final mistake that is made is forgetting why and how you got here. You are here because you deserve to be. You should make the most of every opportunity that is presented to you. Don’t forget what you’re here for!
Starting at Bond University can be a very overwhelming experience, with all new surroundings. Just take it all in and plan- you’ve got this!
