Since we all know the cost of living whether that be on campus or at home, what better way to evade studying than by having an awesome day out with friends…completely free of charge. Especially since who doesn’t love free stuff, right? Well, keep reading for the best 10 free things to do around Griffith University.

1. A walk with a view at Southbank Parklands.

Southbank Parklands is the place to be during summer. With its gorgeous views and array of colours, Southbank makes it the perfect destination to let down your hair and relax in the sun and a bonus being that it is only 8.8 kilometres from Griffith Nathan campus.

2. Pack a lunch and enjoy the day at the City Botanic Gardens.

With free entry and lovely flowers, how could one not enjoy themselves at the Botanic Gardens. Whether you feel like studying around nature, reading a novel or just having lunch, the City Botanic Gardens provides the perfect serenity for one to enjoy their day.

3. Get your fitness on at the Mount Gravatt lookout.

Whether you’re a sporty person or just after some good views, the Mount Gravatt lookout is a wonderful way to release those endorphins. Endorphins are mood elevators so exercising is your way to a natural high and what better way to reduce stress? Mount Gravatt lookout is only a 2.2 kilometre walk from the University, making it the perfect go to for a study break.

4. Day at Streets Beach with your friends.

When you live in Queensland how could you not visit the beach, especially when you have a beach just 450m from Griffith’s Southbank campus. So, hop on the University bus to Southbank to enjoy a day soaking in the sun with some friends, and don’t forget the sunscreen!

QAGOMA is the Queensland Art Gallery which has free entry all year round with occasional events and exhibitions on every month (ticketed). QAGOMA is the best place to learn something new and enrich your day, at only 13.1 kilometres from the main campus, this is the ideal place to boost your knowledge.

6. Enjoy the best of what Brisbane has to offer at the Powerhouse.

The Powerhouse in Brisbane is an iconic refurbished house situated on the bank of the Brisbane river. The Powerhouse features art and culture in an industrial space. Comedy is also a highlight at the Powerhouse. Every Friday from 6pm onwards, the Powerhouse puts on a free comedy show and with limited seating available, you don’t want to miss this.

7. If you have a free Saturday, why not come down and enjoy the Davis Park Market.

The Davis Park Market is open from 6am till 2pm every Saturday with a range of goods being sold. Whether you’re after fresh fruit, handmade jewellery or a present for a friend, you are guaranteed to find everything you need at the Davis Park Market, and if you’re trying to save money why not pull up some grass and enjoy the free live music that is on offer.

8. If you feel like jamming out to some music then grab your friends and head down to City Sounds.

Daisy Hill is the ultimate place to go for all your Koala needs. With free entry all year round, what could be better? Daisy Hill Koala Centre was opened in 1995 and newly refurbished in 2009. This centre is home to at least three residential Koala’s in over 435 hectares of open eucalypt forest. Daisy Hill wildlife officers are highly knowledgeable and trained to handle and care for the Koala’s and they even deliver keeper talks twice a day, so you too can know all about Koalas.

10. Step into digital generation at the Cube at Queensland’s University of Technology.

Open from 10am till 4pm and with free entry, the Cube is the next Questacon. The Cube is exactly 11.4km from Griffith University’s Nathan Campus and is situated in the Science and Engineering Building (Level 4, P Block) at Gardens Point campus, QUT (only a 10-minute walk from the city centre).
