Nothing makes you realize the importance of good food, than adult-hood. One of the perks of being an adult – you have to cook it yourself and you have to pay for it yourself. So if you are me, whose idea of cooking is making a salad or a sandwich, entering college made you appreciate good food even more. Half of the time spent is either eating and or thinking about what to eat next. (Or thinking about what other amazing things you need to eat in Sydney!)
Yes, I get it, I may seem too sad over the thought of eating the same thing all the time, but there’s light at the end of this tunnel. I live in a city which has incredibly diverse and scrumptious food options, so much so that it’s hard to shortlist to just “5 most delicious things you need to eat in my college town a.k.a Sydney, before you graduate or die”, but anywhoo, here’s my list (in no particular order). Say “yeah mate!!” if you agree that these are things you need to eat in Sydney!
If brunch is not just a meal but a way of life for you (even if it’s not) and if like me, all your bleak funds go to brunches, it’s a must visit place. The menu is full of beautiful combinations of fresh foods, that it’s hard to choose. My favourite thing is a slice of raspberry & Chocolate delice. The perfectly dense and light at the same time pastry coupled with freshly ground coffee from the in house cafe or a fresh season fruit smoothie, in the periphery of this tinsel town like place, is sure to make your day. And fear not savoury lovers, the cafe and the potting shed has impeccable food options. I go for the grounds big brekky, because go big or go home right? P.S. It’s the perfect place for the fairy tale date and if you visit in the evenings, you may be lucky to get a free loaf of sourdough, from the open system in house bakery. Definitely one of the top things you need to eat in Sydney!
The city’s best Lebanese chicken for past 16 years. The chicken is tender and has amazingly crispy skin with smoky flavour. The bustle at the Granville outlet defines it’s popularity. The garlic chicken has been claimed to be “so delicious you’ll stop breathing”. You’ll see a bustle of students always lined up for it, and it’s definitely worth the wait.
The combination of my two favourite sweet tooth cravings, baklava & ice cream. This little cafe in the ever happening area of Newtown embodies a little bit of turkey, offering a unique range of ice creams, Turkish teas, coffees and of course the baklava ice cream. You’d imagine it to be too sweet, but somehow they’ve managed to keep the sweetness to levels of perfection. Before you dive into the range of baklava’s they offer, the ice cream is a must try. So try before you die!
You’ll probably have to wait in line, unless you manage to remember to make a reservation for this multi award winning Chinese restaurant, but the in-house fresh made tofu is worth the wait. This Chinese restaurant, located very closet to QVB, is the perfect place for your dinner plans. The tofu is freshly made and is so soft, and crunchy on the outside, that you can’t help but be blown away by the texture. The centre is the really soft boiled egg, tofu covered in spinach flakes. If you’re not a tofu fan, try anything from their exquisite food and dessert menu which includes their famous, and super cute looking, steamed sesame piggy faced buns. The drinks menu is also worth a look, the hot & cold teas are a treat to the eyes and throat.
This little cafe is located in multiple locations, the closest to UNSW is the one at The Spot. The strawberry spongecake is their best seller and each batch gets sold like hot cakes (pun intended). It’s the perfect amount of sweet and strawberry with pistachios on top of fluffy layer cake.
