Arm yourself with a microwave-safe mug and a microwave and make an incredible dessert in minutes with these drool-worthy mug cake recipes.

Let’s be honest; whether it be for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just because you’re craving it, dessert is often the meal we’d rather be eating. But who has the time to make an entire cake or batch of cookies every time you want dessert? Not me, thank you very much! So arm yourself with a microwave-safe mug and a microwave and make an incredible dessert in minutes with these drool-worthy mug cake recipes.

1. The Classic Cake We’ll Always Need

A classic vanilla cake, fluffy rather than spongy, and the flavour strength can be totally up to you (as the recipe I use, uses both vanilla bean and vanilla extract). Good for the times you don’t want anything to sweet and a really great breakfast treat! You can find it here.

2. The Moistest Chocolate Mug Cake EVER (Egg-free!)

A classic cake of chocolatey goodness that is egg-free, which is great for anyone with an egg allergy, but even better because you can eat the batter worry-free! Find the recipe here.

A zesty cake, perfect if you have a lemon tree or just feel like a lemon cake. This recipe also works with limes or oranges; BONUS! Find it here.

4. Pumpking Spiced Latte, in Cake Form!?

An American Fall staple that seems to have taken the world by storm, now in cake form. And this one comes with a caramel sauce bonus recipe as well; find it here. Considered sweet, but pumpkin is a vegetable, right?

5. Gluten Free Chocolate Heaven

For anyone who is gluten-intolerant, or would rather a gluten-free option, this one is for you — more chocolate for you! Find this super simple recipe here.

6. Choc-Chip Cookie Dough as a Cake in a Mug. ‘Nuff Said.

A cookie classic, now available in a one-serve mug that’s all for you. The recipe says 3-4 tablespoons of chocolate chips, but seriously, go wild! Find it here.

7. Three Words: Vegan. Chocolate. Brownie.

A vegan chocoholics bliss, with a non-vegan and/or gluten free option as well! Eat it as a gooey mug cake or eat the batter beforehand — no eggs mean no problem! Find this recipe here.

8. Strawberries and Cream; The Love Story

A timeless pair in a mug. Be flexible with this one though, change the fruit or add another. I added fresh raspberry and loved it! Find the recipe here.

9. Basically a Hot Chocolate Cake, Only With More Chocolate and Molten Marshmallow

Marshmallow and chocolate cake all in a mug? This is just a better version of a hot chocolate, particularly amazing on a cold and rainy day but also suitable for if you just decide you want cake at 2AM! Find the recipe here.

PRO-TIPS:

  • All microwaves vary and some cooking times may need to be adjusted.
  • If your mug cake is undercooked (still super gooey), put it back in at 30 second intervals (checking after every one) until it’s done and remember for next time.
  • If your mug cake is overcooked (super dry, but not burnt), sometimes a tablespoon of milk dashed over the top while it’s still warm can help moisten it a little, or even just having it with milk, tea or coffee would work.
  • If your mug cake is burnt, sorry, but it’s best to throw that out — your body does not need that. Consider checking if your microwave is too high or that you put it in for the correct time, because these things are hard to burn.
  • Most of these recipes can be easily made into gluten-free or vegan-friendly, though it may take a few trial runs — but that just means more cake to eat on the way there!

Feel free to use these recipes as written or to add your own spin to them! Did you add a new ingredient or completely swap one out? Did you make it to the cooking stage or was a recipe too irresistible to wait and the batter was gone before the mug made it to the microwave? Tell us in the comments below!
