10 Atlanta Sights You Have To See

Atlanta is a wonderful, vibrant city with so much to offer and so many attractions to see. Whether you’re a local or just coming for the weekend, these are the 10 Atlanta sights that you have to see!

1. Krog Street Market and Tunnel

The Krog Street market is what I consider to be the locals’ version of Ponce City Market. Located in downtown Atlanta, the market gives you a bit of the city’s personality, while also being a great place to get dinner or a snack. With so many food stalls to choose from, deciding what to eat is nearly impossible! There’s sushi, amazing fried chicken, Jenny’s ice cream, and more. Make sure to also see the Krog Street tunnel nearby; it’s one of the only places where graffiti is not only allowed but promoted!

2. Old Vickery Mill

While this sight is not technically in Atlanta proper, it’s in the nearby suburb of Roswell right next to the old historical Roswell town center. The mill and the covered bridge is a great place to take the perfect Instagram picture and the surrounding park is big enough to hike for hours. Situated right on the river, you can lounge by the waterfall and have the perfect afternoon. It’s an amazing place to see nature, but be active and get your body moving!

3. The King Center

The King Center is a homage to Martin Luther King Jr. and other prominent activists in the civil rights movement. Their collection of letters, photos and artifacts is incredible and spending some time in the museum will teach you a lot about Atlanta’s history before, during, and after the civil rights movement. Right next door to the King center is the Martin Luther King Jr. historic park, which surrounds his birth home and the church where he and his father were a pastor. It’s amazing to stand in the house where such an amazing person lived and see the historical church.

4. The Beltline

The Beltline is a long, paved walking path in midtown and walking along it is a great way to see some Atlanta sights. It starts near the entrance of Piedmont Park and if you’re ambitious, you can basically walk all the way to downtown! You can rent bikes, and there are plenty of cool murals to take pictures in front of. As you walk along, there are tiny exhibits that showcase Atlanta history and plenty of tempting restaurants along the sidelines. Also, it’s the shortest way to get from Piedmont Park to Ponce City Market so you have to check it out!

5. The Botanical Gardens

Most cities have a botanical garden, but Atlanta’s is especially impressive. Every season there are different exhibitions. Every Christmas there are lights in the garden, and during other seasons they have guest artists display sculptures and other exciting displays all over. The gardens are huge and have so many different parts. There’s a desert section, an orchid garden, a tropical greenhouse, and a Japanese garden! Even better, you can see the entire skyline and take idyllic pictures all around the gardens. They’re constantly expanding and adding new things, so it’s an Atlanta sight to keep coming back to.

6. Decatur Square

I may be biased because I’m a Decatur resident, but the square is one of the most fun Atlanta sights. Whether you want to go out to a bar or get dinner, this place has it all and it’s so fun to walk around in too! The bars in Decatur are really unique too; there are pool halls and even a tiki bar. Decatur square is super easy to get to because there’s a Marta station right in the center. The square is one of the most fun places to have a night out, but it’s also home to arts festivals and a beautiful courtyard to walk around in. There’s even a concert venue, so you’ll never run out of things to do here!

7. Suntrust Baseball Park

There are a lot of stadiums in Atlanta, but this one is truly spectacular. Not only is it a great place to watch baseball, but the surrounding area, which is called the Battery, has so much to offer too! There’s a concert venue and lots of new trendy restaurants. Inside the stadium, they have plenty of amazing food options and even a Chik fil A! There’s plenty of room in the stadium, so finding cheap tickets is easy and it’s a fun way to spend the afternoon with some friends, your family, or a significant other. Even if you’re not a huge sports fan, this one of the Atlanta sights to definitely add to your list.

8. The Atlanta Zoo

I’ve been to many zoos in multiple countries, but the zoo in the city I call home is the best one. The Atlanta zoo is home to the only Panda twins in the country and even though they’re not babies anymore, they’re still so darn cute. In addition to these lovable furry creatures, there are so many amazing primates like gorillas, orangutans, and monkeys. If you check out the zoo, be prepared to spend basically the entire day there. Located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, the zoo is especially large and they have more animals than you could ever imagine. Going to the zoo isn’t just for kids; they have evening events where you can get your brew on in the zoo!

9. The Shops at Buckhead

Modeled off of Rodeo drive, the Shops at Buckhead have all the designer brands and elegant restaurants. It’s one of the fancier Atlanta sights and worth spending an evening at. It’s a beautiful place to walk around in and it’s super pedestrian friendly, so you don’t have to worry about cars. There’s rooftop bars, a super unique tapas place, and a fancy brunch spot. If you’re looking for something more low-key though, there’s a shake shack. After you’ve gone to the shops, you can walk around the surrounding area too, which shows you the culture and ambiance of the Buckhead area!

10. Piedmont Park

This is probably the most well known of the Atlanta sights, but it’s totally worth all the hype. The park is full of amazing city skyline views and the greenery is also wonderful to look at. There’s a lake that you can sit by and so many other places for photo ops. Often times, there are events going on in the park and so many of them are free! I once saw famous senators at a mayoral campaign rally and got interviewed for TV; all for free! If you get hungry, the surrounding area is full of fun trendy restaurants and if you’re looking to spend the evening in the area, there are plenty of bars and a movie theatre too. If you only have a weekend in the city, definitely prioritize going to Piedmont Park.
