At-Home Beauty Treatments to Treat Yourself

At-home beauty treatments can be some of the best ways to treat yourself any time, including after a long day or as a great start to a new day. These at-home beauty treatments are more natural ways to produce healthy, glowing skin and hair, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated. Try one of these different beauty treatments for a relaxing difference to your health and body you’ll love.

Homemade Wax

If you are unable to get to a salon for waxing, want to try home waxing for yourself, or are looking for a new beauty hack to save money and time, here is a homemade wax you should try. To wax at home, you may also choose to purchase wax strips, a wax warmer, wax applicators, and wax collars. Hard wax is one of the most common types of waxes and is great for smaller, sensitive areas such as the underarms, bikini line, eyebrows, and upper lip. The main ingredients are simple beeswax and rosin. It also doesn’t require wax strips inherently.

The ratio is typically four parts rosin to one part beeswax. You can also add desired olive or coconut oil. It can be melted in a warmer for approx. 15 to 20 min. on high and once melted can be kept on low for further use. Pull the skin you are waxing taut, apply the wax in the direction of hair growth, keep your applicator in the center of the applied wax as you do a small oval shape down and back up the center of an area, creating a ridge all around.

To remove a portion of wax, put the tip of your applicator stick to the tip of your wax spot, and quickly flick to lift a portion off. You will then firmly grasp that portion and rip off the rest of the wax spot. You can use this removed portion to attach its shiny side to the shiny side of another spot, press it down, and quickly rip it off, removing the second portion.

Soft Wax

Soft wax is a great at home beauty treatment for larger areas such as the legs, arms, and other less sensitive body parts. Soft wax does require wax strips or cloths for removal. A great recipe for soft wax is 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 tbsp lemon juice, and ¼ cup honey. Melt the sugar in a pot over medium heat. Once it’s caramelized, slowly add the lemon juice and honey. The wax should be batter consistency. If it’s too thick, add a small amount of water and stir. Soft wax can similarly be melted in a warmer.

Clean the area with oil or other cleaning products, then apply desired baby powder to soak up wetness and make hair stand up so it’s easier to wax. Apply hot wax in the direction of hair growth. Apply a waxing strip and remove in the opposite direction of hair growth. By folding a strip you can also get multiple uses out of each strip! Baby oil or wax-off products can remove any excess wax or stickiness that remains.

Sugar Waxing

A sugar mixture is great for all skin types and sensitivity. Its recipe is 2 cups granulated sugar, ¼ cup lemon juice, 2 tbsp water, and 1 tsp salt. Mix ingredients in a pot over medium-high heat until caramelized, transfer to a container and allow to cool. You want it to be about 300 degrees F. but without a thermometer, test consistency by dropping a bit in cold water. It should sink to the bottom, clump together, and be moldable by fingers. Sugar wax can be reheated the same as hard wax. You can mold it to the area with your fingers, then quickly pull off the tip to remove.

Brittle Hair

If you don’t have the healthy hair you’re looking for here are the at home beauty treatments you should try. For dry or brittle hair prone to dullness or breakage, use egg yolks in your hair. You can mix a little lemon into the yolks for a brighter smell. Apply from roots to ends of your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes to 1 hour for maximum penetration.

Messy Curls

Instead of fighting unruly curls and waves, define them with a homemade curl enhancer made of honey and molasses. These ingredients attract and lock in moisture, treating and hydrating hair. Mix ½ cup molasses or maple syrup with ¼ cup olive oil, 4 tbsp lemon juice, and 2 tbsp all-purpose flour. Mix ingredients until there are no clumps and it’s warm over a stovetop. Separate hair into four sections, evenly apply the mixture and cover with a shower cap. Let it sit for 45 min. and rinse thoroughly.

Dry Hair

Overnight hair treatments are the way to go towards at-home beauty treatments if your regular conditioner isn’t providing you enough moisture. Take 1 tbsp coconut oil, warm it in the microwave, massage it into damp hair, and sleep on it. You can wear a shower cap and lay a towel on your pillow to prevent messiness. In the morning, shampoo it out. This treatment should only be used on dry, damaged areas, which occur from the mid-shaft to your ends. With finer hair, you can also use a lighter oil such as olive or avocado.

Itchy Scalp

For an itchy scalp, there is no better way to treat yourself than a tea tree oil treatment to your scalp to give your hair what it needs for health and beauty. Drip 3 drops of the oil onto a cotton swab and dab onto the scalp. If it irritates, you can dilute it with 1 ½ tbsp of oil to 1 cup of warm water. You can also break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the oil on itchy areas to moisturize skin, remove dead skin, and unclog follicles. Leave the oil on overnight and wash out in the morning.
