10 Apps Any Bookworm Should Have On Their Phone

As more of our world becomes digital that means there are more apps for books! As someone who would rather have a physical copy of the book in my hands, it has been a hard pill to swallow. However, apps for books have quickly grown on me. I still like to have a physical copy, but this is a great way to take your books on the go!

1. Serial Reader

This is one of the best apps for books if you like older literature. This app divides the books into issues. You get an issue every day, but if you want to read multiple issues a day you have to pay for the app. Upgrading it costs only $5 and gives you a lot more than just the ability to read at your own pace.

They have many different categories of titles from classical literature like Homer’s Iliad to various plays by Shakespeare and other playwrights to H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man. This app was a lifesaver on a trip I took last Spring. I wasn’t able to pack much so taking physical copies of books were out.

2. Nook

You no longer need to buy a Nook tablet to read on the go! This Nook reading app is free and allows you to browse from many titles to download and read instantly. Once you start reading a book you can customize the font, backlight, text size, margin width, and line spacing.

This can also be synced across your iPhone and iPad devices. This is also available on android and windows phone and devices.

3. Audible

Audible is a cool and awesome app for books because it allows you to listen to a book. This is a great option for someone with long commutes or just people that simply prefer to have a book read to them. You can even have a 30-day free trial to try this app out and see if it is something for you.

If you don’t like it all you have to do is cancel before your free trial ends.

Audible has thousands of titles to choose from and if you already have an amazon prime account then you can also use Audible using that same log in details.

4. Goodreads: Book Reviews

This is one of the apps for books that allow people to write a review of the books they read. This isn’t an app for books that has books that you can read, this is mainly to share your opinion with a community of book-loving individuals.

It will even recommend books based on the books you’ve read and reviewed. This is one of the best places to go if you are looking for another book to read but don’t know what to read.

5. Bookly

Bookly is an app that allows the user to track their reading as well as their reading habits. This is an app for books where you can set your book goals and then easily achieve them. Add the book that you are reading and the page you started on, then start the timer once you start reading and stop once you stop. Then, record the page number of the page you ended on.

This app for books also has a video game feel to it that you can unlock achievements the more you read. For many, that is a great motivator to read more books.

6. My Books

Here is another app for books that has thousands of titles for free! They even have a wide range of books like Serial Reader does. The app will even give you book recommendations when you have nothing else to read and do not know what to read. This app has ebooks AND audiobooks giving you the best of both worlds.

7. Thrift Books

Thrift Books is an app for books where you can buy new or used books at a lower price. This is mainly commerce-based. This app has many titles in either new or used condition and most are up to 90% off of the normal list price.

Thrift Books carries a range of books from classic literature to graphic novels to textbooks. This is a great resource for any college student who does not want to take out a loan just to buy their books for class.

8. Apple Books

Apple Books comes pre-loaded onto any iPhone. Most of the books in the library are not free, but they also have a decent range of free titles to choose from if you don’t want to spend money at the moment. If you are in the market for buying a book through this app they have so many titles and genres to choose from.

There is definitely something for everyone and always a book on your to-read list due to the wide range of books they carry.

9. LibriVox

Based off of the website, this an app for books that comes with many audiobooks. This app is mainly used in scholastic settings (at least in my case). However, they do have a decent amount of books ranging from plays to classic literature.

This is a public domain app and website so some books have multiple readers. Some may be harder to listen to than others but it is a great tool if you want to read a book but do not have the physical copy.

10. Libby, by OverDrive

Libby is an app for books that work in partnership with your local library. All you have to do is scan in your library card to the app and then it will bring the titles available at your library to your phone or tablet so you can read an e-version of them. This saves you from going to the library if you do not have the time or are on the go and need a new book.
