5 Amazing Switch Games For RPG fans

The RPG, or role playing game. Some of the best games of this generation are in this genre, especially on the Nintendo Switch. For this reason, I’ve gathered five of the best switch games in this genre, so I can share them with you.

1. Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Honestly, this is one of the best switch games I’ve ever played. Three Houses is a turn-based, tactical RPG in the long-running Fire Emblem series. In this particular iteration you play as a mercenary-turned-professor, and must instruct your students in the ways of war. However, things quickly spiral out of control, with hidden conspiracies, inter-kingdom politics, and the strange little gremlin child living in your head. The stories of Three Houses are incredible, and even though the game is almost 5 years old at this point, I still don’t want to spoil it. There are 4 possible routes the story can take, depending on which of the three houses or factions you choose to teach. The game has several difficulty levels, so you can choose just what you want your experience to be. I love this game a lot, and hope you end up liking it as much as I did. However, It does require a bit of time commitment in order to fully understand, as player must go through multiple storylines to uncover the whole truth.

2. Persona 5 Royal.

Next up on our list of switch games is another instant classic. Persona 5 Royal is an absolutely incredible JRPG. Honestly, I’ve been a huge fan of the Persona series for a long time, and I’m really happy that this absolute masterpiece finally made it to the switch. In Persona 5 Royal, you play as Japanese high-school student, on probation for a crime they didn’t commit, with an axe to grind against the corrupt and malevolent adults like the ones who got him in this situation. Gathering a group of friends, the protagonist forms the phantom thieves, who use their stylish skill and supernatural powers to steal the twisted hearts and desires of corrupt adults. It can get pretty heavy at times, but ultimately its a fun experience. The music is also an absolute treat, with such bangers as “Take Over”, “Last Surprise” and “Rivers In the Desert”.  Honestly, i could write a whole article focusing just on why I love this game. I can’t really say more, but the game has an amazing plot twist that I refuse to spoil. Just go out and play it yourself.

3. Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

The next game on our list is the third installment in the Xenoblade Chronicles series of switch games. I’d recommend playing the previous two games, both of which are available on the switch, so you can have additional context for the world of Xenoblade, you don’t really need to do so to understand the game itself. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 tells the tale of 6 young soldiers, three from each side of a war, who come together to break the cycle of killing that keeps the people of their world, Aionios, trapped in self-destructive stasis. Our brave heroes must overthrow the true enemies orchestrating the war, and discover truths about themselves and their world. I’m a huge fan of the Xenoblade Series, this game is no exception. The dynamic combat system, ability to swap between numerous classes, and the incredibly vast and detailed open world make this game a triumph of design. The characters are also incredibly well-written, with a wide variety of colorful personalities that bounce off each other very well. If you’re a fan of JRPGs, you should absolutely give this game a try. The game also has a lot of dlc to check out if you have the extra funds.

4. Shin Megami Tensei V

At number Four on our list of Switch Games, we have the fifth mainline game in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. This game is similar to it’s spin-off series Persona, but darker, more difficult, and more focused on combat. You play as a student who, after a demon attack, merges with another being and becomes a powerful entity known as a Nahobino. The conflict that drives the plot of SMT V basically boils down to the fact that God, yes, capital-G God, is dead, and now His throne is up for grabs. As a Nahobino, you’re one of the few real contenders, so you must become strong enough to become the new Creator. The combat is turn-based, with a focus on exploiting the weaknesses of your foes to gain more turns and thus more advantage. There’s actually a fairly interesting world and story to seek out, but the difficulty and strategic combat are what most die-hard fans of the series play for. Think of it as an intensely goth version of Pokémon with much higher stakes.

5. LIVE A LIVE.

For the last of our switch games, we have a real throwback. LIVE A LIVE was originally released in 1994 for the Super Famicom. However, this classic RPG has been given new life thanks to a remaster on the Nintendo Switch. This old-school RPG follows 7 distinct characters, and their stories in various places and times, ranging from a caveman in prehistoric times to a maintenance robot on a futuristic spaceship. These 7 stories are tied together by a common villain, Odio, who our heroes eventually are all brought together to confront. The story is incredibly deep, and the storytelling holds up well, even by modern standards. I had thought this game had been forgotten by basically everyone, but I guess I was wrong. I’d love for a new generation of gaming enthusiasts to rediscover this absolute classic, so I’ve added it here. The gameplay may seem a little on the simple side, but you can tell that real passion and art was put into this game, so it holds up well to the test of time. It’s not perfect, but the best things in life never are. Have fun.
