Olivet Nazarene University has many different events for its students to participate in. Many of their events are free while others you have to pay for. This list of events is only a small fraction of what they offer and Olivet will always send out an email to their students of what is going on during the months at the college.
In December, Olivet Nazarene University’s music department puts on a concert featuring all the bands and choirs performing Christmas songs at Centennial Chapel. This event is for all the students and even the community of Kankakee to attend! During the performance, there is a section you can sing along with the choir to the Christmas songs that are sung.
This event does get very crowded so it’s best to get there early so you can find seats. Some seats are reserved for parents of the students performing or even special guests. But as the chapel starts to get full, the reserved seats will be taken away to make room for all the people to find a seat.
The weekend before finals week, Olivet Nazarene University puts on a Christmas party for its students at the Ludwig Center. In the main dining room, there is so much food to eat! Nachos, meatballs, a variety of desserts, and so much more! They also have a chocolate fondue pot in the basement of Ludwig where you can dip pretzels, strawberries, and marshmallows into.
A variety of different activities are available as well at this party. Massage parties, video games, and coloring are a small selection of activities to choose from at this party! Many of the students also where their ugly Christmas sweaters to the party. Some people will even bring puppies so you can have some puppy cuddles!
Twice a year, Olivet Nazarene University has movie nights for its students and even the community to attend. The movies that are shown are ones that have just been released on DVD. In the past, Olivet has shown Avengers: Endgame, Jurassic World, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and Big Hero 6, to name a few.
These movie nights usually happen on Friday and Saturday nights with two times each night to see them in case you missed it. You can bring in snacks and drinks to have while you watch the movie and bring your friends to see the movie! The movies are either in Chalfant Nursing Hall or the Larsen Music Center.
Olivet Nazarene University hosts concerts in Centennial Chapel that are Christian rocks bands. Casting Crowns, Sidewalk Prophets, Tenth Avenue North, Jeremy Camp, Colton Dickson, Mercy Me, and Toby Mack have been some bands that have performed at Olivet. The college always promotes the concert early on to get their students excited about the bands and also to encourage them to purchase their tickets early.
Tickets for these concerts are usually twenty dollars, but if you have the discount card, students can get the tickets for only fifteen dollars. The tickets do go fast so make sure to get your tickets soon before they sell out! If you live near the chapel, you can hear the music coming from the chapel. It is an exciting event to attend if you can!
Each department has different activities to get their students involved as well as get to know them. The English Department, in the past, has put on different parties related to a book. One year, they had a Harry Potter-themed ball where they were drinks and food from the books and everyone learned how the waltz.
The Biology Department has a Halloween costume party, where all the students come dressed in costumes and have fun! Look into your department to see what fun activities they are planning. You can invite your friends to these activities, even if they are not in your major! The departments encourage all the students to attend to try and get people to come. If you are a student at Olivet Nazarene University, you need to attend some events within your major!
At the end of the first week of classes, Olivet Nazarene University holds a block party for its students to attend. There are a variety of booths with different food choices to eat. Pizza, hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, snow cones, and many other food options to choose from! They also have vendors where you can tickets that are coming up.
Different games can be played at this party but if you want to play, try to come right as it opens so you can be one of the first people to play the games. Music will play in the background and sometimes, they play the Cupid Shuffle for you to dance along with. It’s a very fun and exciting event to attend and it’s a must if you are a student at Olivet Nazarene University.
Olivet Nazarene University has many different plays and musicals to attend. They have done Into The Woods, Guys and Dolls, and many other different shows. Students can audition to try to claim a role in the play or musical and you don’t even have to be a Theatre major to audition! Try out and see if you can get a part!
If you don’t want to try out, you can always watch the performance. They have two performances per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The play is in the fall and the musical is in the spring. These performances are over the weekend, starting on Friday night and lasting till Sunday afternoon. Olivet will be promoting these performances the closer they get to opening night. Tickets for these performances are ten dollars.
