Amazing African American Women Of The 21st Century

African American Women have been on the rise in recent years. They have been reaching high and receiving considerable coverage on many important issues and movements. 

These are just a few of the amazing African American women of the 21st century that have made a name for themselves and served as a source of inspiration for the world. 

1. Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi is one of the most well known African American Women in her generation, namely because of the extraordinary, pro-activist ideals she holds and shares with the world. Throughout her career, Yara has brought attention to the issues of inequality and injustice. She has chosen to encourage others to speak out about these issues using her platform.

Along with being an activist, she is also an actress and model. She is most known for her role in Black-ish, Grown-ish, and the movie The Sun Is Also A Star. 

Yara Shahidi serves as a good role model for all African American Women. She is dedicated to informing generations of people about pressing issues and encouraging them to become more informed.

One of her projects, Eighteen x 18, is a platform to engage with her generation, encouraging them to peak their truths. It is designed to get the younger generation active in learning about the issues present in today’s world and voting.

Yara Shahidi serves her generation by being an inspiration for women around the world. 

2. Jada Pinkett Smith

I couldn’t write an article about Amazing African American Women without including Jada Pinkett Smith. She has many talents, which include her being an actress, singer-songwriter, screenwriter, and businesswoman.

One of her most notable successes has been her television talk show, Red Table Talk. The shows stars Jada, her daughter Willow, and her mother Gammy. Together these African American Women discuss tough, but important topics about this day and time. 

The work they are doing on Red Table Talk is very important as the design of this platform is geared towards putting the tough questions in our family discussions to confront many of the problems we are faced with today.

3. Stacey Abrams

Lawyer, politician, and author are a few of the talents Stacey Abrams has excelled in. She has served in the House of Representatives for nine years and as minority leader for six years while representing the Democratic party. 

She has shown a large interest in fighting for the people of Georgia and has chosen to remain vocal on the issues of election reform and voter suppression.

She has recently expressed her willingness to becoming Vice President for any of the candidates as it would be a disservice to all African American Women if she said otherwise as she stated during her interview on “The View.”

She will be well-rehearsed for her plans to become president within the next two decades.

4. Shonda Rhimes

Shonda Rhimes has accomplished much in her line of work. She is the epitome of African American Women in her work as a television producer, television and film writer, and author. One of her most well-known creations is the medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy which sh is the head writer and executive producer. Another of her many accomplishments is her political thriller series, Scandal.

These are just a few creative works that have hit it off with multiple audiences. Shonda Rhimes is on this list of Amazing African American Women because of her mastery of writing. She has earned many awards for her talents like the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding in a Dramatic Series and the Writers Guild of America Award Award for Television: New Series. 

Of all the African American Women writers, Shonda Rhimes is the first African American woman to create and executive produce a Top 10 network series. In 2018, she signed a megadeal with Netflix and is developing eight television series for them. 

I don’t know about you, but I am very excited to see what Rhimes is preparing for the world next.

5. Tarana Burke

Taran Burke is a civil rights activist who founded the Me Too Movement. It is aimed towards raising awareness of the pervasiveness of sexual abuse and assault in society.

Her work as an advocate began as she was a member of youth leadership camps as well as sister circles as a teen, Burke’s involvement moved her to later lead her own. 

Burke and Just Be In.c Girls for Gender Equity have partnered together to provide an online community for survivors, allies, and advocates to aid one another by providing resources for healing, preventative measures for communities, and more so that we can all live in a safer world, as  TeenVogue writer Vera Papisova has written. 

This movement has served as a motivational source and outlet for not only African American Women, but all women around the world.

6. Gabrielle Union

She has many talents, to name a few, she is an actress, voice artist, author, and activist. 

Gabrielle Union is most notably known for bringing awareness to the “Me Too” movement as well as sharing her personal testimony. Most recently, Gabrielle is known for her support of the LGBTQ+ community as she and Dwayne Wade’s transgender daughter revealed her identification.

She also opened up about her fertility issues and was pleased to introduce the world to her first daughter, Kaavia James. Gabrielle Union and her personal testimonies have served the world by allowing herself to be vulnerable in front of the world and stand for everything she believes in. She has become quite an inspiration to African American Women as well. 

This list of Amazing African American Women is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the amazing work African American women have completed to better themselves as well as the world.
