Sport’s Illustrated’s famous Swimsuit Issue always makes headlines for its risque photos and celebrity engagement. This year, the SI Swimsuit edition has launched a new project called “In Her Words,” which was shot by a female photographer. This movement allowed these women to express their voice, passion, and strength by painting words on their naked bodies. Aly Raisman’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit shoot has sparked a lot of attention as she has been in headlines recently for her outspokenness about the sexual abuse she received from the USA Gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar.
Aly’s inclusion in the SI Swimsuit issue gave her a chance to speak out about her experience yet again, as she has quickly become a face and activist in the #MeToo movement.
Through this shoot, Aly’s aim is to show women that they should not be ashamed to be a victim, and they should embrace their strength as a woman and command respect. The words Aly has chosen to put on her body such as “Women do not have to be modest to be respected,” “fierce,” and “live 4 you.”
In addition to this inspiring shoot, Aly Raisman’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoot also included some OG SI swimsuit shots. Aly is a big advocate for body positivity, and her powerful photos definitely show it. She looks incredibly beautiful and inspiring in the photographs, showing off her strength and confidence as an abuse survivor.
Earlier this year, Aly became a model for Aerie, and none of her photos were retouched. Aly joined the campaign with Yara Shahidi and Rachel Platten, both of whom, like Aly, have overcome their own hardships and battles. This all-inclusive and diverse campaign aimed to empower women and challenge beauty standards by portraying natural, normal women.
We could not be more proud of Aly and her activism in the women’s movement, and we cannot wait to see where she goes from here!
