5 Affordable Outfits To Survive The Next 6 Months of Freezer Burn
Boston can be one hell of a freezer in the winter. With these affordable outfits, you’ll be certain to spend the right amount for the right quality!
Shorts With Flip Flops
Well, this is certainly the simplest of affordable outfits. Granted the emphasis on this list isn’t functionality, but the level of cost, and it certainly is the cheapest. At one point or another, during your college experience, you’ll likely encounter the putz that decides to wear only shorts and sandals during the middle of the coldest freezer burn of the winter/early spring. Many people often resent figures like that, there’s something awfully un-self-aware about them.
Sometimes, people can’t help it, and the sympathetic rout is always worth considering, in cases such as these. Armed with a pair of headphones, and a Coca-Cola (like their idyllic Christmas commercials), you’re good to go for a comically unaware outfit!
Layers Of Sweat Pants
People sometimes judge the sweat pants look, but in layers, and with a water-resistant jacket, one can stay pretty warm, and wearing one of the more comfortable affordable outfits. Going to Berklee, where a healthy portion of the student body can be treacherous, so often, a number of students, and even sometimes faculty look down on how dressing warmly should also be a formal occasion. Growing up in a place where there were few cold winters that required some kind of formal wear, one will be very unfamiliar with the snobbery that accompanies warming oneself. Sometimes one is meant to feel at fault for not complying with such standards, but rest assured, being comfortable with affordable clothes is nice.
That’s the irony one could guess relating to comfort, things that reinforce jealousy or wearing flashy functional clothes is a touch silly. Besides, most clothing that is either eye-catching, fashionable, or popular is so rarely actually conducive to heat.
Army Surplus Combination
An army surplus store is a great place not only to find affordable gear but clothes that will be the most durable in the most miserable conditions. It is a great place to look for boots (winter combat boots from the army store will likely last 10 years if taken care of properly), overcoats, such as single or double overcoats, and undergarments designed to keep you extra warm. One essentially finds that in exploring various clothing stores that most clothes are essentially made by slaves, that is people who work in sweatshops for cents on the hour. Well, the army surplus store is of no exception, except it is made by slaves, that is to say, prisoners, many of whom are on charges based out of unfair and racist drug policing laws.
In any event, at stores like these, you have access to the finest outdoor equipment available, designed for the (excuse the jingoism) most advanced and trained military in the world. It will keep you warm for the year and is very cost-effective. It also puts a little color in your banner, assuming you’re into patriotism if not, that last point’s not for you!
An Expensive Coat a Lazy Rich Neighbor Threw Away
When considering options that are affordable, all options ought to be on the table, be it through begging, borrowing or stealing. If it is a surprise to discover, Berklee is a place where a number of the student body is incredibly privileged, and as such, a number of your classmates will likely have numerous articles of affordable outfits that their parents purchased for them that they don’t actually need, or are too spoiled to understand how to pack everything as they leave for the semester, and throw away or leave behind articles of clothing that cost several hundred dollars. At the end of the spring semester, when everyone is on the move, keep your eyes open.
Often your neighbors or roommates will not have enough space for everything and leave behind gifts for whoever sees them first. Another time when such charity is going around is Allston Christmas, when in Allston and Back Bay, Berklee and other neighboring college students throw away so many consumer goods, calling it waste is an understatement. You likely can acquire perfectly functioning household goods, couches, chairs, lamps, and jackets, so keep your eyes out this Allston Christmas!
Layered Combinations Of Second Hand Clothes
The most affordable outfits one could wear during this frigid season is a combination of second-hand clothes. It can be ordered so that the lighter clothes are closer to your core. Wooly and scratchy socks are a must during the winter because they preserve the most heat and prevent frostbite on your toes.
An Allston Christmas jacket and second-hand clothes are likely the most accessible of affordable outfits because, in essence, you don’t have to pay for them, you just need a relative or parent that can give you some clothes that are a little too big or too small for you. Hopefully, you don’t have too many relatives that are under the impression that your taste in clothing is so bad that by their saving graces, you now have an outfit that not only keeps you warm but makes you fit a certain aesthetic. Second-hand clothes shopping at thrift stores is always a great choice too, there are some real chic locations in Boston worth visiting!
