Accessories Making a Comeback in 2020

It is inevitable that trends from past decades will circle around and become popular again. We see it all the time, everywhere, and truly some fashion never goes out of style. As someone who goes to Instagram to see what my favorite celebrities are wearing, time and time again they are bringing back something I never even thought of purchasing or wearing. If you’re not into wearing flare jeans or denim on denim, nostalgic accessories are the next best add on to any outfit. Here’s some ideas on how to flashback to a beloved era!

Hair Clips

If you had multi-colored butterfly clips, you are also probably surprised that they’re sold at Urban Outfitters now. We’ve seen a massive comeback for our treasured 90’s and early 2000’s hair clips and it’s amazing. Remember all the barrettes we’d actually use to pin pieces of our hair back? Well, now they’re bigger and come in more designs, and you can wear them solely because they look that cool. Kitsch is one online store that is known for their hair accessories. Bobby pins, barrettes and claw clips are just a few of their items. If you have short hair, long hair, it doesn’t matter- pin one of Kitsch’s rhinestone “VOTE” or “FEELINGS” bobby pins in your hair and you will be sure to rock that hairdo and make a statement. From tortoise shell, metallic, matte tones, rhinestone and pearls, hair clips can be found in various styles to suit your look. Like most hair accessories, clips can be found pretty much everywhere at different price points. You can be sure to add to your collection of accessories and your look by adding a little glisten of silver or gold, or a pop of color to your everyday hairstyle!

Straw Bags

Nope, straw bags are not just for the beach. They’re neutral, laid-back and can add to any simple outfit. They create a comfortable, relaxed look and can be found at Target, Nordstrom or high-end designer brands like Tory Burch. Straw bags are also more hip now than ever when it comes to what you wear for accessories. They can be found in different styles like circular, rectangular or square. You can bring back the chill vibe of the 60’s and 70’s when pairing it with your favorite maxi dress, slouchy jeans, or overalls.

Scrunchies

I’m not sure if a type of hair-tie can ever really go out of style, but we’ve seen the rise of scrunchies recently. Not only do they not pull on your hair like some hair-ties can, they also come in many fabrics and prints. Velvet, faux fur, tye-dye, palm tree, polka dot and metallic are just a few types of scrunchies you can find. Now, scarf scrunchies have made their way into the spotlight too. They will hold your hair up just as well as a regular scrunchies, but can add a subtle accent to your hair with their longer pieces of fabric. Add a satin scarf scrunchies into your low ponytail, or one of the more basic scrunchies at the top of your high ponytail for a cute add on. For thicker, longer hair, “dinner” scrunchies exist on Kitsch’s website. They are larger than the usual scrunchies and are perfect for holding up a bun. Scrunchies are one of the most essential hair accessories to have and can transform an effortless look depending upon what kind you wear and how you wear one.

Tiny Sunglasses

For as long as we can recall, oversized sunglasses were the go-to accessory. Whether you wanted to hide your hangover, keep it casual, or make a statement, larger glasses were there for you. Just like aviator style, there are some types of glasses that never go out of style. On the other hand, tiny sunglasses had their time, but are now seen more often than usual. We have seen the Hadid sisters and Kendall Jenner wear the tiny sunglasses, and not just for fashion week. That’s right, small frame glasses are in style all over again. Oval or rectangle – you’re sure to bring back the 90’s when rocking these in public. Since they can stick out a bit more than your average pair of sunglasses, it can be tricky not knowing what to wear them with. If you’re trying to bring back a full look from this past century, go for an oversized denim jacket, high waisted jeans and a band tee, or a matching sweatsuit. We’re here for the tiny sunglasses and the trend that reminds us all that we can wear whatever we want, no matter what year it is!

Square Toe Shoes

It’s not your homecoming dance in 2000, but you can definitely expect to see square toe shoes again. Boots, sandals, heels, flats were once known for their square edge on the top of your foot. Obviously, we see more round than square shoes nowadays. But, they are back and can be found online on websites such as Lulu’s, offering square toe heels with a plastic strap in the middle of the shoe. Nothing says late 90’s and 2000’s like a reminder of the plastic jelly shoes trend. Madewell is another store that offers square shaped flats, in prints such as multi-color faux snake skin. When I first saw the trend in person in San Francisco, I did wonder to myself if I could pull a pair of square toe shoes off, or if they were even really back in style since its been years since I have seen them. Let’s remember, trends stick around for a long time and come back at points because people choose to wear what ever they like and want. The reality of trends coming back in style is that there is never a right time to try it again, or wear it for the first time, you just have to go for it.
