A Ranking Of Every Song In Harry’s House

If you’re anything like me, then chances are you’re obsessed with Harry Styles. Naturally, I was up at midnight last week waiting for the release of his new album, Harry’s House. Maybe this is a sign that I have way too much time on my hands, but I decided to rank each song. Please note that every one of these songs is incredible; even if they score low on the list, I’ll still listen to them on a daily basis. My ranking of every song in Harry’s House, from lowest to highest, follows as such:

13. Little Freak

My favorite Harry song is “Kiwi,” mainly for how sexy it is. After seeing that the title of this song is “Little Freak,” I expected it to outdo “Kiwi” in terms of sexiness. Though a beautiful song, “Little Freak” is by no means sexy. Compared to the other songs on the album, “Little Freak” doesn’t appeal to me as much. The melody isn’t particularly memorable against songs like “Music For a Sushi Restaurant” and “Keep Driving.” Maybe I’m the only one who thinks this, but doesn’t it sound like the type of song that would play in a John Green movie? I will say, the lyrics are nothing short of amazing. “Stay green a little while/ You bring blue lights to dreams” and “Your delicate point of view” are especially clever lines. I still love this song, despite it being last on the list!

12. Satellite

Once again, I’m getting John Green movie vibes from this song. Listen to “Satellite” and try to tell me it doesn’t belong in The Fault in Our Stars. I get that some songs are supposed to be repetitive, like “Golden,” but “Satellite” feels like it’s moving in a constant loop. And that isn’t necessarily a bad thing! That makes the song all the more catchy. I just wish that maybe the tempo picked up earlier, or that more instruments were introduced in the middle of the song. I LOVED the ending when the pacing sped up and the beat dropped. Incredible.

11. Grapejuice

What is it with Harry and his fruit motifs? “Kiwi,” “Cherry,” “Watermelon Sugar,” and now this. I really enjoyed this song upon my first listen, and I love it even more now. I tend to prefer Harry’s more upbeat songs over his slower ones. “Grapejuice” falls somewhere in between slow and bouncy, making it the perfect song to relax to. Harry’s voice is so smooth and dreamy here…I’m obsessed. Imagine lounging at the beach with “Grapejuice” playing on your speaker; I feel like that’s the type of setting this song is made for. This ranks at #11 only because, again, there are more memorable songs on the album.

10. Cinema

“Cinema” is definitely one of Harry’s funkiest songs on the album. I can imagine people dancing to this at a party in the 70’s, even though Harry wasn’t even alive then. This is another great song to rock out to on the beach. “Cinema,” like “Grapejuice,” is a tonal blend of relaxed and upbeat. Lyrically, “Cinema” isn’t as intricate as some of his other songs. I still think the chorus is insanely fun, and I struggle to get it out of my head.

9. Keep Driving

I’ve definitely come around to liking this song more. At first listen, I would have ranked “Keep Driving” lower. But it’s so. Damn. Catchy. I love the escalation at “Passports in foot wells…”; that breaks up the tempo in a very surprising, very exciting way. The lyrics are also nice (“Side boob” caught me off guard) and add to the song’s playful tone. I only wish it were just a little bit longer, coming in as the shortest song on the album at two minutes and twenty seconds. Keep driving and keep singing, Harry!

8. Boyfriends

It pains me to put this song so low on the list. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love “Boyfriends.” The beginning is so captivating, and the harmony feels like someone’s kissing the insides of my ears. But again—and this is my personal preference—I like Harry’s upbeat songs more. That said, “Boyfriends” is probably one of my favorite slow songs of his. I’ve heard this song before its release, as someone released the clip of him singing it at Coachella (thank you to whoever that was). I instantly fell in love. “Boyfriends” is so soothing and lyrically rich…however, I’m a bit confused. Hasn’t Harry been a boyfriend himself? Is this something of a self-critique, since he seems to be criticizing all boyfriends? Maybe someone can enlighten me on the meaning!

7. Late Night Talking

Oh hell ya. That’s all I have to say. This song has it all: memorable lyrics, great instrumentals, and a beat that’ll make you dance the night away. It’s a classic Harry song, and you really can’t go wrong with it. If I’m not mistaken, I think he also sang this at Coachella. I wish I could have been there for that reason alone.

6. Daylight

The end of “Daylight” is what sticks out to me the most. The way the music crashes is hypnotic; I love it when songs descend into chaos, of which “Daylight” is no exception. Though this song is fairly short (only two minutes and forty-four seconds), it manages to pack a punch.

5. As It Was

“As It Was” is definitely the song I’ve heard the most here, seeing as it was released earlier than the others. That doesn’t mean that I’m sick of it. As a matter of fact, I’ll still blast it when it comes up on my playlist. Whenever I zone out, my mind always replays, “Go home, get ahead, light-speed internet.” The nod to his goddaughter in the beginning is particularly sweet.

4. Daydreaming

My favorite part about “Daydreaming” has to be the beginning. What better way to start a song than with “by-ya-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba”? I also love that he includes the trademark Harry scream before he gets into the chorus. I can see this being a hit at his shows. If only I could get tickets for one!!

3. Love Of My Life

Okay, okay, hear me out: this sounds like a One Direction song. I’m 100% getting “Night Changes” from “Love Of My Life,” though I can’t explain why. The fact that it reminds me of One Direction makes me love this song even more. I really like the way Harry sounds here, with there seemingly being an echo-like effect on his voice. I’m also a big fan of his use of synths in Harry’s House. That being said, I love how the synth sets up the song…it creates such an ethereal effect.

2. Matilda

Tears. I am in literal tears whenever I hear this song. It would be criminal for me not to put it in the top bracket. “Matilda” is top-notch songwriting, having lyrics that are both unforgettable and emotionally impactful. A good song tells a story, and Matilda’s is one that will stick with you. When I first heard this song, I immediately thought of the movie Matilda. I recently learned that this was part of Harry’s inspiration for writing the song!

1. Music For A Sushi Restaurant

Do I have any idea what this song means? Nope. Do some of the lyrics not make any sense? Maybe. I love “Music For A Sushi Restaurant” for how zany it is. “Music For A Sushi Restaurant” is to Harry’s House as “Treat People With Kindness” is to Fine Line. It’s experimental, groovy, and oh-so catchy. Did I mention that Harry scats in this? That just gives me more of a reason to love it. I think this was the third song I listened to on the album, and I knew right then and there that nothing else would top it.

Whether you agree with this ranking or not, you have to admit that Harry’s House is an amazing album. Petition for Harry to release another album soon?
