There are 8.406 million people in New York City and still, it seems like it’s really hard to find someone good to date. Being single is different for a lot of different people. In this day and age, and in our generation, dating isn’t just black and white. There are so many variations to it, you could just be talking to someone, vibing with them, snapchatting with them, flirting on different social media platforms etc,… and the list goes on and on. So if this is all a little too confusing for you, you may decide to just be single.
If you’re single, it could mean that you’re not seeing anyone in any romantic capacity or that you’re casually dating or just hooking up with a few people or that’s just what you’re telling people while you have a girlfriend/boyfriend on the side. Whatever the case may be, I’m going to do my best to tell you how to be single at St John’s.
Now you’d expect that in college, people are not going to want to be in a serious relationship but that doesn’t seem to be the case at SJU. A lot of the people in my year were already in long term relationships at the beginning of our first year. This is a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it because it just means the pool of single people is a little small.
The obvious choice here is Tinder. Not a method I’m really familiar with but I’ve had friends who’ve had great experiences on there. Obviously there are other apps like Grindr and Bumble. There are apps for everyone and almost everything. I know for sure that there are a lot of people using those two but I’m not sure about the others, always worth a try though.
You could always do it the old-fashioned way and just go up to that cute girl/guy in your 7:30 and strike up conversation, maybe ask them to grab a coffee or something. This is a much scarier option than online dating because even I can admit that it’s nerve wracking to walk up to someone and put yourself out there. A less scary version of this is striking up a conversation and adding them on Snapchat, adding them and sending cute flirty snapchats.
Parties are always a great pace to meet people you potentially want to date and if you’re both at a party or a bar, chances are you already have that one thing in common which is a great starting place.
Okay, some people only want to hookup for a night or a few hours. Now, you can always hook up with people you already know, like friends or the person who gives you the notes when you’ve decided to skip a class.
As with everything else, there are apps for this kind of thing. I don’t know that these are what the apps were made for but many people on campus definitely use Yik Yak and then Kik to meet people and just hook up. If you’re not looking to hook up, Yik Yak and Whisper are just great places to go when you’re looking for a laugh.
Another way to meet someone to hook up is to go to Trads, Parsons or Frat parties. All great places to meet people who are just looking for a hook up. At any party, there is always someone solely looking for a good time.
Hahahaha…text your girlfriend/boyfriend and apologize for even thinking about cheating. There is nothing here for you! If you’re not happy, respect your partner and just leave! Then you can use the tips above.
If you’re single, completely alone and you’re happy with it- More power to you! Do you! Hang with your friends and strengthen your friendships. Explore the city. Eat healthy. Drink a lot of water. Hit the gym regularly. Try new things. Go out. Rest. Get your education on. Take bomb selfies and just have fun. These are supposed to be some of the best years of your life.
