Students across the country (and around the world) are preparing for their first week of classes. As exciting as freshman year can be, it can also be a little nerve-wracking until you get used to your new schedule, routine, and route to class. Follow my guide to make it through your first week and month of classes on campus at CU Boulder!

1. Utilize the Rec Center!

Whether you’re working out the stress of starting classes or getting some exercise to get the blood pumping before studying, the rec center is the perfect place to go. CU Boulder has one of the best rec centers in the country and there are tons of amazing classes available to take. Though it is always full of students looking to squeeze a workout in before class, you can always find space on the rock climbing wall, the indoor track, any of the studios, weight rooms, or buff pool to kick your own butt or grab some sun.

2. Learn to love coffee.

Never underestimate the importance of coffee. It is one of the only ways to make it through your 8am’s in one piece or to cure that nasty hangover from the night before. You can always find coffee around campus at places like the C4C Bakery, Pekoe Sip House located in ATLAS, Folsom St Coffee located in Muenzinger, and the Laughing Goat in Norlin Library.

3. Napping between classes is essential.

Maybe going out on a Wednesday was a bad idea, but now you’re sleep deprived and have two hours until your next class. Two words: nap time.

4. Avoid dinner rushes.

The UMC doesn’t get as crowded at dinner time as the C4C has. To avoid utter chaos, the UMC is always a good choice. You can also check out Farrand, Sewall, or Will Vill for a quicker option- they have Grab-N-Go’s located on the bottom floor for faster access, as well as mini markets to grab any necessities you can think of for your dorm fridge. It may be crowded, but there are lots of choices that are ready for you to pick up so you can get in and out quickly.

5. Going to The Hill is risky business!

When they know all the freshmen are coming, cops hang out at The Hill waiting to hand out MIPs. Be careful out there. The first couple weeks of school are always higher alert, so be aware and have at least some of your wits about you!

6. Grab N Go’s are your best friend.

When you’re in a hurry between classes or just don’t have time to sit down and have a big meal, you can find a Grab N Go close by and fuel up! There is one located under Farrand Hall and Sewall, so be sure to locate them on your walk to class.

7. Know where your nearest printer is.

There’s a good chance that a trip to the printer could take longer than you think. If you know where to go and how long it usually takes, you can save some time (and stress)!

8. On the same note as #7, know what building you’re headed to.

Knowing where your class is and how long it will take to get there is key. Start paying attention to how early you have to leave for class. It could buy you a few extra minutes in bed or help make sure you’re not late for that 8 am recitation.

9. Talking to people with their door open is a good way to make friends.

Everyone is in the same boat as you, so when you walk past a dorm room with an open door, saying hi is never a bad idea! Not only is it a good way to break the ice, but most of the residential halls are RAPs, or Residential Academic Programs, so you’ll most likely have at least one class with them. Why wait to make the connections?

10. Hungry Buffs is the ultimate college life hack.

Started by a CU Business student, Hungry Buffs is a convenient delivery service for students from restaurants around Boulder. Whether you’re craving Boulder Baked at 1am or you just don’t feel like going out for food once the weather starts to get cold, Hungry Buffs will save you at some point throughout the year. Look out for Hungry Buffs tents handing out coupons for food delivery to your dorm. Take advantage of the free or discounted items. You can thank me later.

11. Go to the events!

School events are a great opportunity to go out and have a good time while adjusting to college life at CU Boulder. Whether it’s a concert on Farrand Field or Taste of Boulder, there is always something going on.

12. Get involved.

Join greek life, a club, or an intramural sport. CU Boulder offers tons of opportunities to get involved and meet people. It’ll look great on your resume and it’s the easiest way to get to know people who like the same things as you. Aside from meeting people in general, it’s definitely the best way to find your people.
