DIY Holiday Doormat
My roommate and I, especially freshmen year, loved having a little doormat in front of our dorm room door. It added a little extra something nice to the hallway. Of course, we had to deal with immature college students stealing it from us, but we always got it back in the end. However, we couldn’t always find a doormat in the stores to fit what we wanted, and that’s where this DIY doormat comes in handy. Sometimes, the ones at the department stores are just too cheesy. This is a really simple task and can be done quickly. And, it can be completely customizable! So you can switch up the color scheme, design, anything!
Materials:
- Bristly door mat
- Spray paint
- Craft and acrylic paint
- Small paint brush
First, make sure that the area you’re working in is well-ventilated and that you are making your mat over cardboard or newspaper, so you don’t ruin your surrounding with spray paint. Then, paint your mat using spray paint. In this tutorial they used gold. You can choose whichever color you’d like, but keep in mind the color of your mat. A light-colored paint probably won’t be able to mask your mat as well as a darker one. One coat of paint should work, but go ahead and do two if you’d like.
Next paint your trees, or whatever design you’d like. On your first coat, use your craft paint. For your second coat, use acrylic paint. Make sure to allow some drying time in between coats. If you’re doing the trees, you can freehand them or measure them out, whichever you’d prefer.
Now just let it dry, and use it! This would look great if you have an apartment off campus, and could be a great housewarming gift.
