How To Pull Off The No-Makeup Makeup Look Today

Let’s be real, doing your makeup every morning can get exhausting. Some days I wake up exciting to do my makeup routine, but other days I dread it. The last thing I want to do as I’m running out the door is take thirty minutes to primp. If you’re looking to spend less time on your makeup, or if you’re trying to nail a more natural makeup look, here are some options for you:

1. Stick To Neutrals

Neutral colors are key for the perfect no-makeup makeup look. Stick with softer colors, like light pinks and peachy tones, or a basic beige or brown scheme. If you want to nail a no-makeup makeup look, try not to make your makeup too severe. Everything should be applied gently, but if you want to make the colors pop a bit more, use primer beforehand. Glossier’s Cloud Paint and eyeshadow palettes are what I recommend for a look like this.

2. Mascara Is Your Best Friend

A good mascara is clutch for a no-makeup makeup look. You can apply as much as you want and it’ll still look natural. Mascara is great for accentuating your eyes, so you’ll draw more attention to that feature rather than to your makeup. My go-to brand is the MILK Makeup KUSH High Volumizing Mascara, which can be found at any Sephora. I generally opt for mascaras with thinner brushes, as thicker ones tend to clump up more. For a more glamed up no-makeup makeup look, try magnetic lashes instead. There are a ton to choose from at Target, and unlike typical falsies, magnetic ones blend in well with your real lashes.

3. Fluff Up Your Brows

Feathery brows are in right now, and they’re crucial to the no-makeup makeup look. Fluffy brows show that you’re carefree, but simultaneously put together. To achieve this look, I suggest finding a liquid brow gel that matches your hair color. If you want, you can go one shade darker to make them more defined. First, you’ll want to flick the gel brush downwards on your eyebrows. This will make the color more ingrained, giving your brows an extra pop. In order to make your eyebrows look feathery, you’ll then flick the brush upwards. Eyebrow pencils work too, though in my opinion, they’re harder to maneuver and run the risk of making your brows look chalky.

4. Gloss>Lipstick

Serena van der Woodsen was so right when she said, “Lipstick lasts longer, but gloss is more fun.” Gloss is super fun, and it’s also something you can incorporate into your no-makeup makeup look. When you’re aiming for a natural makeup look, you should gravitate more towards glossy than matte. Lipgloss is typically less pigmented and will help you shine. Pink is my go-to color for lip gloss, but brown is also good for a neutral look. Buxom has so many amazing lip-plumping glosses to choose from!

5.  Change To Liquid Eyeshadow

If you want a sheeny, but still neutral no-makeup makeup look, swap your powder eyeshadow for liquid. This will give you a natural looking glow, while adding some pizzazz to your everyday makeup. To keep it more muted, go for a white, brown, or pink tone. Glossy is better than glittery for a no-makeup type of look, though of course, it’s up to you what you want to wear. I know I keep recommending Glossier’s products, but they work so well for natural makeup. I love the Glossier Lidstar, especially in the shade “Slip.”

6. Ditch The Black Eyeliner

Black eyeliner is usually a staple for makeup looks, but there are better options for the no-makeup makeup style. All you need is a light application of brown eyeliner. Brown will still highlight your eyes (especially if they’re brown themselves!), and it’ll also look more natural and less conspicuous than a deep black. For an even softer stroke, apply brown eyeshadow with a sharp angled brush. Though eyeshadow might not last as long as eyeliner, it has the same effect. And don’t forget to add some white eyeliner on the bottom, too!

7. Skincare Before Makeup

The best way to pull off the no-makeup makeup look is to work on your skincare, first. Healthy skin is like makeup in itself; it’ll leave you shining, confident, and radiating beauty. My skincare routine is not as intricate as many others I’ve seen. I start with a cleanser (I’m a Cetaphil girl through and through), rinse and apply another cleanser (Milky Jelly Cleanser from Glossier, surprise surprise), throw on some hyaluronic acid, and finish with an SPF moisturizer and primer. You can tweak your routine to whatever works best for your skin, of course. Just remember that the best treatment for your skin is to ALWAYS take your makeup off at night!

Are we surprised that I’m mentioning Glossier again? I didn’t think so. If lipstick is too bold, try a tinted lip balm instead. They’re probably the subtlest option for lips, and as another plus, they’re totally nourishing. My lips feel like pure butter whenever I wear my Glossier Balm Dotcoms. They also smell so so good. If you’re looking to buy any, I suggest the Cookie Butter Balm Dotcom and the new Lavender one. Try not to eat them, though. Some flavors are tempting.

9. Emphasize Your Features

If you have freckles, don’t cover them up with foundation. You should try to draw attention to them for a natural, self-loving look. I honestly envy those who were born with freckles—they’re adorable, and they make you look like you spend hours out in the sun. Or maybe instead of freckles, you have a mole or birth mark you’re self-conscious of. All marks are beauty marks—don’t cover those up, either! I have some acne scars that I’ve learned to make peace with. Instead of trying to hide them, I’ve fully embraced them.

Makeup is a form of self-expression, so feel free to experiment with your routine. Head to Sephora and stock up on goodies! Though of course, true beauty is found within.
