5 Fashion Tips for The Fashion Illiterate

Fashion can seem daunting, stressful, and unattainable. Some of you may not even know where to begin, opting for sweats instead of putting in the effort, but I am here to tell you that fashion is simple if you allow yourself to discover it. Take a moment to discover yourself and your style with these 5 simple fashion tips!

 1. Identify Who You Are

Your clothing tells the world who you are without you ever having to open your mouth. The first step in fashion is self-discovery. Ask yourself questions like: “Who am I?” or “How do I want to present myself?”. People with vibrant personalities may gravitate toward bright colors and bold patterns, while someone with a more relaxed personality may go with a cooler color palette and muted patterns. Your God-given hue is the base color for any outfit, so play yourself up!  Start by choosing colors that you like, then narrow it down to colors that go best with your skin tone. Monochromatic colors like black, white, tan, brown, and grey bring out the best in any skin color. People with paler skin may like to wear deeper colors, like wine red, navy blue, or olive green. By wearing these colors, the contrast of the porcelain look of pale skin and the deepness of these colors don a dramatic effect. On the other side, those with brown skin may choose lighter colors like orange, yellow, or lime green. The brightness of these colors against the depth of melanin allows the colors to shine and the bronze of the skin to glow. Discover who you are and allow yourself to sparkle in the clothes that best suit you!

2. Find Your Fit

The fit of your clothes is the most important part of fashion. You may have on a designer Gucci sweater, but if it’s too small you’re neither doing yourself or Gucci any favors. Look at your body and decide the style and fit that best accents you and feels the most comfortable. The first rule of fit: know your size. I know that may seem very obvious but not everyone knows their measurements. Grab a measuring tape and slide it around your waist. Once you know your measurements, decide how you want your clothes to fit you. Do you want a fitted look, or loose and relaxed? Do you prefer to have your bottoms ride on your hips or have a high waist? Do you want a cinched waist, a hip hugger, or a looser fit? There are so many different body types out there and everyone is different. To discover what is right for you, determine what parts of yourself you want to play down and which parts you want to accentuate. If you want to accentuate your waist, wear a peplum style top, a dress that comes in at the waist and flares at the bottom, or just go for the fitted look; all of these styles will make your waist look small and your confidence level to boost! Take the time to find your fit and I guarantee your clothing will make you look and feel better than before!

3. Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

Your shoes can make or break an outfit. Take a stunning red dress and pair it with a pair of dirty, old sneakers, and suddenly that dress won’t seem so stunning anymore. Don’t think of your shoes as an afterthought, but as an accent. Never sacrifice comfortability for style; you can have the best of both worlds! If you have a hard time walking in stilettos, opt for the more comfortable chunky heel that is just as fashionable. Be sure to align your shoes with your outfit. If you are dressed up, opt for flats, heels, or a sleek pair of boots. If you are dressed casually, go for a sneaker, casual flat, boot. One type of shoe that everyone should have in their closet is the simple, yet versatile white sneaker. Whether you like plain kicks, a fresh pair of high tops, or a pair of fashionable platform sneakers, all of those shoe styles in white will set off almost any casual outfit. When wearing shoes that have more color, be sure to color coordinate! Get your shoe swag on and pull together your outfit with shoes that slay!

4. Jackets, Belts, & More

Accessorize your simple tops and bottoms to add an extra flair to your outfits. Instead of going for just a simple tee, add a colorful jacket to effortlessly take your outfit to the next level. Add a little sparkle to your dress and accentuate your waist with a fashionable gold belt. Bring life to a monochromatic outfit with a vibrant or patterned scarf. A lot of times, one little accessory can change the look of an entire outfit. A headband can even add another dimension to a one-note outfit. When getting dressed in the morning, ask yourself, “Would anything make this outfit look better?” to determine if you have reached your full fashion potential. Do you have a top that fits your waist a little too loose, or a dress that makes you look a bit too square? Pull out a fashionable belt to show your waist and elevate your outfit to reach its fullest potential. Don’t settle for an unfinished look, accessorize and live your day with confidence!

It’s time to revamp your closet with your awakened sense of fashion. “Where do I start?” you may ask. Many companies have many styles that you can mix and match to fit you. My favorite clothing website is definitely Shein. Shein has a large array of options at reasonable prices and glamorous styles that will make you do a double-take. Stop in at a department store near you for your basic foundational tops and bottoms needs. The last step of this process is to do it! Grab your clothes, shoes, and accessories and put them all together! Once you are all dressed in your self-picked getup, remember the most essential piece of fashion: confidence!
