12 Tips To Make Straight Hair Wavy

Hair is something that will forever be fun to play with no matter what age we are, how many times we have changed it, where we live, what job we may have, etc. Hair transformations are a way of reinventing ourselves, after a bad breakup, after getting fired from our job, or just wanting to try out something fresh and funky. Hair transformations can be anything large or small, from a new style, to a new cut to an embellishment. Our hair is a canvas and we can do whatever we please with it. While in the mix of summer, a favorite trend for this season is the effortless beach waves or the tousled hair. Read on to learn how to achieve this go-to summer look and the best tips for turning straight hair into a wavy ‘do.

Wear Your Hair in a Braid Overnight

One of the most effective, easiest and heat-free ways to make straight hair wavy is to wear your hair in a French braid overnight. The best method for making your curls stick the next day is to shower the night before and wait until your hair is damp before braiding your hair. The dampness will help the hair to fold into each other. For an overall bushy 70’s hair look you can put your hair in a French braid the night before. The French braid will give you curls all over your head to achieve this look. For more volume, slightly brush out the curls to get a bouncy, fluffed out look. For a slightly more casual look, only braid the bottom half of your hair after a shower and leave in overnight. Take out your two braids in the morning to reveal tight, bouncy curls. Brush out the coils for a soft and pretty bohemian look.

Use a Three-Barrel Rod

If you want to go the not so natural route and still want some wave to your hair, you can try using a three-barrel rod to create glamorous, loose, bouncy curls and then brush them out into waves or leave them big and full.

Use a Wand on Your Hair

You can also try using a curl wand to curl the hair how you want it. The beauty of curling wands is that you can create the curl or wave you want based on how you angle the hair on the rod –  either tight and coiled or loose so that the curls are not so structured.

Use a Crimper

If you want an edgier look you can also try using a crimper to create more zig zag waves. You can also brush these out to create those loose waves you are striving for. These waves will give you a more ‘80s-inspired wave, which can look a bit more costumey, but will ultimately give you the volume you are hoping for.

Use a Salt Spray

Using a salt spray on your naturally straight hair will give some natural texture to your hair without using any heat or harsh chemicals. There are many salt sprays on the market that work well for different hair types and will give you that effortless, beachy look that you envy on surfers and island goers.

Use a Funnel or Diffuser on Your Hair

Again, another way to avoid using heat is to apply a diffuser or funnel to your damp hair that has a small amount of heat blowing out of it but not like a traditional blow dryer that will leave your hair straight and feeling thin. The funnel or diffuser will dry your hair but not take out the natural wave in your hair that is left after you dampen it. A funnel or diffuser will give you the soft, gentle waves that so many women strive for.

Put in Flat Pin Curls

Pin curls are another way to achieve the wavy mermaid hair look without applying any heat. Just wrap your hair into small swirls and clip the hair with the pins tightly to your head. For the best effect, it is recommended to wear the pins overnight. You should also swirl the hair when it is damp and not soaking or completely dry, which helps hold the hair. When you take out the pins the next morning, make sure to hairspray your hair to make the waves last all day.

Flat Iron Your Braid

If you are in a rush to achieve effortless curls and cannot wait overnight to pull this off, you can always braid your hair tightly and run your flat iron over the braid to lock in the curl. Repeat this a few times over each braid to make sure it stays in. Take out the braids and hairspray immediately.

Apply Mousse to Your Hair

Mousse is your best friend when you are looking to add texture and volume to your otherwise thin and straight hair. Do not go crazy with this product because it could start to make your roots look greasy, but definitely do not be afraid of its powers. Apply a small swirl of mousse in the palm of your hand and scrunch upward throughout your whole head.

Let Your Hair Air Dry

Another tip to achieving wavy hair is to not blow dry your hair at all and to just let your hair air dry. Your hair will naturally feel thicker and fuller without the applied heat.

Apply a Texture Spray

Applying a texture spray that comes in a bottle is not hard to find these days at any local convenience store. Spray a small amount of any texturizing spray into your hair each morning and scrunch upwards to give you natural-looking texture.

The Good Ol’ Hair Dryer

The good ‘ol hair dryer can also help you achieve volume and soft waves with a simple blowout. Use a large barrel brush to brush through and twirl the hair as you press the hair dryer close to the hair.
