20 Netflix Shows That Are Perfect For Quarantine
Now that the world is stuck inside, there’s no better way to kill time than a good Netflix binge. From documentaries to mockumentaries, from vulgar and gory cartoons to live-action shows of every conceivable caliber, Netflix has got all you need to push through the tediously tiring and bluntly boring days of quarantine. To get you on your way to being a master couch potato here are 20 great Netflix shows that are perfect for binging on over quarantine!
1. Trailer Park Boys
The number one on our list of Netflix shows, and rightly so in my personal opinion, is one of the greatest cult shows of all time, and with about 16 seasons and 5 movies, it’s definitely a great way to kill some time! Follow the stoned and drunken escapades of three lifelong friends, Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles in their seemingly endless quest for cash by any means, from greasy, low-risk crime to international drug smuggling. Now there’s even another season coming out, specifically another season of Trailer Park Boys, The Animated Series, which is set to come out on Netflix next month on May 22nd.
2. Magi
If you’re looking for a solid anime with lots of episodes, look no further than the Magi series! Specifically, the series is arranged as follows: Labyrinth of Magic, Kingdom of Magic, and Adventures of Sinbad. Between the literary references to the Arabian Nights, genuine characters and character development, and intense and epic fight scenes, you simply can’t go wrong with this addition to our Netflix shows.
3. Brickleberry/ Paradise PD
Sickening cartoon vulgarity at its finest, these two Netflix shows are a must-see for anyone with too much time on their hands and a guttural sense of humor.
4. Tom Segura, Ball Hog
So maybe it’s not exactly something you can “binge” on per se, but I like Tom Segura and he has a new special on Netflix, so I’m going to talk about it anyways. His new special, Ball Hog, is one of his darkest, most vulgar, antisocial specials yet (just as an example, the title “Ball Hog” has something to do with your mom…). It’s funny AF, assuming you’ve got the stomach and the lack of sensitivity for it.
5. The Magicians
A live-action selection for our Netflix shows. The Magicians is an American fantasy that’s like Harry Potter and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe had a dark, f***ed up little baby with a genuinely tasteful sense of humor and the occasional need to sing 80’s classics. Now with 4 seasons under their belt, The Magicians is defiantly worth a watch if you’re trying to kill some time.
6. Netflix Marvel Series
Netflix’s Marvel series is definitely not what you’d expect after being pampered by the relatively happy-go-lucky feel of the hero’s of the Avengers. Rather, Netflix has a very different presentation of the marvel universe – darker, violent, and human. Daredevil isn’t my favorite show, but then again, that’s just out of a personal dislike for the hero (I mean come on, it’s a blind lawyer whose superpower is that he can see…). Iron Fist is pretty good, but my favorite Netflix hero’s hands-down are Jessica Jones (an alcoholic with super strength), Luke Cage (basically black Superman minus the flight and laser vision), and The Punisher (Antihero and master gums man, Jon Bernthal friggin kills it at the roll by the way). Regardless of who you like and don’t like among the Netflix heroes of Marvel, one thing that can be agreed on is that there’s some pile of episodes to get you through quarantine, so if you’re into superheroes but you’ve been putting off watching these series, now is definitely the time.
7. The Walking Dead
This addition to our Netflix shows seemed to kind of fall off the face of the Earth (and by Earth, I mean public interest) after the first 5 or 6 seasons, along with popular interest in a zombie apocalypse. Now that we once again find ourselves at the precipice of the apocalypse, the severity of which spikes with every new day, what better time to pop a squat, and give this a binge while society slowly crumbles around us? Might as well study up on the survivalist mentality – for all we know that’ll be us soon enough.
8. Dark Tourists
Tiger King ain’t got sh*t on this documentary! Ever wondered what it would be like to hike Aokigahara Forest (Japan’s forest of suicide, the sea of trees)? Perhaps walk around a ruined city, or check out the blast zone of a nuclear detonation site? How about transversing a Forbidden City where anyone who speaks ill of the dictatorship is arrested and tortured? If so, then this is the documentary for you!
9. Last Kingdom
If you like medieval history, why not try this addition to our Netflix shows? The story is, of course, fictional, yet utilizes figures and events surrounding the Viking invasions of the British Isles and the inevitable battle of Hastings. If you’re into that sort of thing, I would highly recommend giving it a watch.
10. Sword Art Online
Any anime fan should know Sword Art Online, discontent because of its popularity or otherwise – it is indeed an absolute must-watch for any anime fan trying to kill some time. Imagine having the technology for full sensual immersion into video games… now imagine a terrorist hacks the game and traps everyone within; death in-game means death of the body in the real world, and the only way to escape is to beat the game. Cool plot right? Granted it takes a weird turn or two, but I would dare say that it’s still a good show and certainly worth a watch, if you’re cooped up and have nothing else to watch. Also, Sword Art Online Alternative, Gun Gale Online is a pretty good season that’s unrelated to the story of Kirito and Asuna, so if you liked the GGO season of SAO, it’s definitely worth a watch.
11. Akame Ga Kill
Another legendary anime right on Netflix! There are quite a few episodes so it’s perfect for binging, and unlike a lot of anime’s of late, Akame Ga Kill actually has a decisive ending, it isn’t full of cringy fan service and filler episodes, and it’s super badass – with intense fight scenes and gore aplenty.
12. Castlevania
A western anime, not unlike The Boondocks. This one, however, is out of the UK, and it’s based on an old-school action-adventure video game. Personally, I’ve never played the games, but the Netflix series is amazing, a dark medieval fantasy-horror adventure tale about Dracula’s revenge against the human race through a demonic invasion, his fall at the hands of the heroes, and most recently, the aftermath of his fall.
13. Knightfall
Follow the story of Landry de Lauzon and his fellow knights as they fight a seemingly downhill battle to preserve the Knights Templar (spoiler alert: it doesn’t go well historically). This is the perfect show for the dabblers of medieval history and lovers of sword-and-shield action alike, and now with a third season along the way, you simply have to give this addition to our Netflix shows a good binge!
14. The Witcher
A Netflix show based off the invariably popular video game, it may not be as in-depth or accurate as the books or the games (also, won’t lie, it’s kind of a pain to keep up with the shifts in timelines), but haters will be haters. It’s a damn epic show regardless of criticism, full of Magic, monsters, battles, and Geralt’s classic dry and emotionless wit.
15. The Seven Deadly Sins
This addition to our Netflix shows is a recent and badass anime that you can only find on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s about the adventures of princess Elisabeth and a band of elite knights known as the Seven Deadly Sins as they fight demons and those they influence across a fantasy Arthurian Britannia. It can get a little fan servicey at times, but it’s hardly noticeable amidst the intense and action-packed storyline.
16. Hell On Wheels
Hell on Wheels is a bit less recent, but it’s a great show, and with 5 seasons you just can’t afford not to binge-watch this now, even more so if you’re into western American history or just like a good western with plenty of cowboys, gunslingers, and violence!
17. Norsemen
This addition to our Netflix shows is like Vikings meets The Office. It has many an awkward moment and shows the Nordic invaders in a much less romanticized light than many other Viking-related shows coming out of late.
18. Frontier
Whether you love colonial history or you’re just a fan of Jason Momoa, Frontier is a great Netflix show for binging during the quarantine. Follow the infamous Declan Harp as he fights to dismantle the Hudson Bay Company with his bare bloody hands. It’s full of gory fight scenes, plenty of deceit and subterfuge, and it’s definitely worth a watch!
19. Altered Carbon
An epic sci-fi where Earth has been abandoned and eternal life is as easy as switching to another body, or skin. Another season was recently added, so now with a full two seasons under the show’s belt, it’s sure to be a binge-worthy show for quarantine!
20. The Frankenstein Chronicles
Another Sean Bean show, this time a 19th-century murder mystery. Will he die in this show? Let’s be honest: probably… but there are two seasons and he’s in both so their’s that. Follow the mystery of the “Frankenstein Murders,” a series of murders in which the body parts of numerous victims are strung back together and attempted to be reanimated in this reenvisioning of Mary Shelley’s famous novel, Frankenstein, as it is unraveled by Inspector John Marlott (Sean Bean).
