How To Make Your Makeup Last All Day

Makeup can be a lot of work. After spending a lot of time applying it, you’re going to want to ensure that your look will last all day. Having a makeup routine that will make your products last through anything the day throws at you is a must.

1. Moisturize Your Skin

The key to having a nice flawless makeup look is to start with your skin. Before applying any makeup products, you should pay attention to your skincare routine. Make sure you’re washing your face before your makeup gets applied, so that you have a clean base. After washing your skin, be sure to follow up with a good moisturizer. Having moisturized skin ensures that your makeup will apply smoothly. If your skin is dry, your makeup will cling to dry patches and will only start to look worse as the day goes by.

2. Use A Primer

Primer should come right after moisturizer in your routine. These products work together to make your makeup go on as flawlessly as possible. Primer makes your skin smooth, which is perfect for when you go to apply face makeup. Primers also help your makeup stay in place for longer. The primers create an extra layer between your face and the makeup you put on, which provides a canvas for your makeup. The most common type of primer used is face primer, which helps lock in foundation, concealer, powder, blush, bronzer and highlighter. If you like doing eyeshadow looks, I also recommend using an eyeshadow primer as well. This type of product creates a base for any shadows you apply. This can help the eyeshadow colors appear more pigmented. It will also help keep the shadows where you apply them and prevent the colors from creasing or fading throughout the day.

3. Use Long-Lasting Products

This step might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s something that a lot of people don’t do. If you want your makeup to stay on all day, then you should make sure your products are aimed at achieving the same goals. There are many long-wearing foundations, concealers, powder, mascaras, eyeliners and more to choose from. Some great face products include the NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation or the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation. Great drugstore options can be found for waterproof and long lasting eyeliners and mascaras. Some of my favorites are the L’oreal Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil, which is available in fifteen different colors. L’oreal also makes the Voluminous Waterproof Mascara, which is sure to last throughout your whole day.

4. Use A Setting Powder

Setting powder is a must for setting your face products in place. This product will help ensure that your foundation and concealer stay in place. If you have oily skin, you also might want to use a mattifying powder in order to help battle any shininess or oiliness that might naturally occur throughout the day or in hot weather. Reapplying powder throughout the day is a simple step that will keep your makeup looking freshly applied for hours. A great drugstore option is the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Powder, which is a great deal at only $6. This can be applied all over your face with a fluffy brush to help set makeup. Loose setting powders can only be used to set the under eye area or all over your face. A fan favorite is the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder. This product is a little more on the expensive side, but it’s great quality. A little bit also goes a long way, so you won’t have to repurchase this product too often, which will help your budget. However, if this is out of your price range, many drugstore brands also offer loose setting sprays, which will give you very similar results at a fraction of the cost.

5. Don’t Forget Setting Spray

Setting spray is probably the most important step in keeping your makeup intact. It should always be applied after you finish your face makeup and apply any other dry products, such as eyeshadow. I apply setting spray before applying eyeshadow or mascara, so that it doesn’t smudge it. I position the setting spray about 10″ away from my face and mist it all over about 3-4x. After the product dries, all your makeup will be secure and won’t budge for the rest of the day. Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray is an amazing option. Setting spray will be your best friend when you need your makeup to look good for long periods of time. It is also a lifesaver in hot and humid weather where you will be sweating, but don’t want your makeup to slide off.

6. Keep Your Hands Off Your Face

This should be another tip that goes without saying, but it’s a great reminder. Most people tend to unknowingly touch their face often throughout the day just out of habit. However, this is a habit that needs to be broken right now if you’re still doing it. Not only does touching your face spread bacteria, which can lead to acne and other skin problems. But, touching your face causes your makeup to rub off and leads it to come off throughout the day if you keep touching it. The best way to avoid this is by making it a point to stop touching your face. Your skin and makeup will both thank you for breaking this bad habit.

Sometimes it can seem impossible for your makeup look to last all day. Factors, such as the weather, the products you use and how you apply your makeup, can all play a part in how long your makeup will last you. But, if you are spending a lot of time carefully applying your makeup to get the perfect look, you should take just as much time and effort into applying simple tips that will make your makeup as long-lasting as possible. Simple steps, like choosing long-lasting makeup and using primers and setting sprays can make a world of difference.
