Godric instructed the Sorting Hat to choose students possessing characteristics he most valued, such as courage, chivalry, and determination, to be sorted into his house. The animal on his crest is a lion, and the Hogwarts house colors are red and gold. Sir Nicholas, also known as “Nearly Headless Nick” by most of the Gryffindor students, is the House ghost. Gryffindor corresponds roughly to the element of fire, since the students carry within them the fiery passion for courage and determination. It may be for this reason that the colors scarlet and gold were chosen to represent the house. If value bravery and kindness, Gryffindor may be your house.

—The Sorting Hat

Slytherin is one of the four Houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, founded by Salazar Slytherin. In establishing the house, Salazar instructed the Sorting Hat to pick students who had a few particular characteristics he most valued. Those characteristics include: cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition. This explains why Draco Malfoy’s Hogwarts House nis seen as bad rather quickly in the series. Also, since many Slytherins eventually become Death Eaters, their tendency to join together may also explain why so many decide to join the Death Eaters. Though founder highly valued and favored pure-blood students, students of any blood status can now be placed in the house after the events of the Harry Potter series. The animal of the house is a snake and its colors are green and silver. There were two notable heads of the house; Horace Slughorn and Severus Snape. Both of them, despite being in Slytherin in their youth, worked against Voldemort. This is important, as it shows that Slytherin are not the house of evil, but of cunning and ambition, which may be used for good.
