Spring clean your dorm room will help you achieve peace of mind and give a comforting place to return to at the end of your busy school day. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore as long as you and your roommates pitch in to help. But with all the messes around you, where do you even begin? Here are 10 tips to help you spring clean your dorm room with ease!
1. Buy a handheld vacuum
When you live in a tiny dorm room, there’s no need for a massive, clunky vacuum to clean up all your messy. Also, the clunky set-up means that you need to dig it out of the back of your closet and untangle the cord before you can actually begin to vacuum your dorm room. All that means you are less likely to do all that work during a busy school day. While a handheld vacuum isn’t as powerful, the convenience of having something small for a quick clean-up will make you more likely to reach for and use your vacuum.
2. Lemons are your best friends
Lemons are a natural way to clean almost every part of your bedroom. Do you need to clear the water stains in your water kettle? Squeeze some lemon juice into your kettle and boil for a few seconds and your water stains will disappear completely! No scrubbing required. Do you need to clean out the gunk in your microwave? Take a lemon rind and scrub away the dirt and scum. Do you want to clean your windows? Mix half water and half lemon juice to give your window a streak-free shine.
3. Coconut oil to polish wooden furniture
With a microfiber cloth and some coconut oil, you can make your wood furniture shine like new again. When your desk takes such a tough hit as your stool, your stress ball, and your bookshelf for all those heavy textbooks, it deserves a little TLC this spring.
4. Reuse old socks or t-shirts for cleaning rags
When you are a broke, college student, every dollar is precious. Every time you reuse, reduce, or recycle, that trickle of pennies and dimes really add up to some significant amounts. Instead of going to the store to buy a new pack of microfiber cloths, you can turn to those clothes hidden at the bottom of your drawer and in the back of your closet. You probably have some hole-ridden socks or raggy t-shirts that you would never wear again and can start a new life as your cleaning cloths.
5. Label your items and designate a spot for them
It can be really annoying when you make some DIY cleansing solutions and store them away in an obscure location and a week later, you forget where you put it and which bottle held which solution. At that point, you probably had to restart your whole process all over again. Label your products and create a little space for all your cleaning supplies. You will always be able to find your products and there won’t be any more confusion.
6. Vinegar detox for the showerhead
You probably don’t think that your showerhead needs cleaning. After all, that’s where you go every day to clean yourself. But the water stain build-up and all other kinds of bacteria living within your showerhead would probably disgust you. This simple trick will clean out your showerhead without much effort. Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and dunk your showerhead into the plastic bag. Secure the bag to the showerhead and leave overnight. When you wake up in the morning, your showerhead will be sparkling clean!
7. Section your clothes and maintain it
It can be such a chore to do your laundry and then sit down to fold a pile of warm clothes. After a long day, you might be tempted to just chuck the entire pile into your closet and deem that good enough. But when you see that mess, despite it being a clean and freshly washed mess, you don’t feel good about it. Divide up your clothes and reorganize your closet this spring! Once you see how much more comfortable you feel when your closet is clear, you will want to maintain this feeling. For those long days, fold your clothes to something fun like a Netflix comedy and you will be surprised how quickly that pile disappears.
8. Velcro items you easily lose
Items, like your keys or those reusable shopping bags, are so easy to misplace but they are so essential to your everyday life. Attach a piece of velcro to the back of these items and stick another piece to convenient locations like next to your front door and you will find that you won’t misplace your things again. It will become easy to adjust this habit of taking and replacing your keys and shopping bags.
9. Baking soda for your stovetop
Those tough residue stains on your stovetop could take all your arm strength and a metal scrub but it still might not come out. Loosen those stains with a baking soda paste (mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water) and it will silly to clean your stovetop any other way and waste all that energy.
10. Vacuum your mattress
Have you cleaned your entire room from top to bottom and you still go to bed sneezing at night? It might be because of the dust within your own mattress. You might not think to clean your mattress but considering the amount of dead skin you shed in your sleep and all the dust that floats around and collects within the sheets, you really should. Vacuum your mattress and you will at least be able to remove the top layer of gunk! You might other ways to deep clean your mattress if you want to really clean up your room but for a monthly routine, vacuuming is just fine.
