What To Do In Every Neighborhood In NYC: Explore The Five Boroughs
UniversUnAre you tired of going to Kimmel choosing food from the same menus? Follow this guide curated by moi, a Brooklyn native, of the hidden New York City sites you should explore that goes beyond NYU Washington Square campus.
1. Go to a Free Mini Amusement Park: Brooklyn Bridge Park
This 85-acre park consists of six piers where you can do an endless amount of activities. From catching a free concert or riding around at Jane’s Carousel to roller-skating to the top 40 hits, I am sure that you can find something to do! See the list of concerts here!
2. Indulge in some Caribbean Food
If you want some quality Caribbean food that NYU dining halls lack, come to this Jamaican based restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Their vast menu contains Caribbean specialities: oxtails, pepper shrimp, curry chicken with rice and peas, beef, vegetable, and shrimp patties and so much more. Check out their menu!
3. Bump Your Ass Off at Eldorado Auto Skooter!
It is located near the national treasure of Coney Island: Cyclone roller coaster. But the bumper cars are where you need to go. It is a thrilling experience bumping into everybody listening to disco music. You may even be in the same bumper car that celebrities such as Tracy Morgan, John Franco, and Gregory Hines were in. After your disco night out, grab a strawberry lemonade and some fried Oreos from Fried Delights, which is right next door.
4. Let’s Talk About Sex!
Now in the world of Manhattan, I present to you the Museum of Sex! In this New York City site, you are educated on the transformation of human sexuality throughout the decades. There are many art exhibits such as Leonor Fini: Theatre of Desire, NSFW: Female Gaze and Celestial Bodies: The Couples VR Experience that is dedicated to the phenomenon of sex and sexuality.
5. Treat Yo Self to a Sugar Rush at Black Tap!
You’re welcome in advance, or sorry in advance if you are on a diet. But this cozy restaurant has all the comfort food you need from craft burgers, shakes, French fries and crispy onion rings to buttermilk coleslaw. Black Tap is famous for their 1,600 calories milkshakes, which is definitely worth it.
6. Be an audience member at New York’s Hottest Shows
Shows such as The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Saturday Night Live and Wendy Williams all tape in Manhattan. Upcoming guests include Melissa McCarthy, Phoebe Robinson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Maya Rudolph, Nick Kroll and Constance Wu. Get your free tickets here!
7. Get Your Archery On at Gotham Archery!
Archery is a fun sport that centers on concentration and relaxation. Don’t shy away if you never picked up a compound bow and arrow. Head to Gotham Archery to channel your inner Katniss Everdeen and/or Daryl Dixon!
8. Catch Your Favorite Celebrities at BUILD!
Every week celebrities are interviewed at Build about their latest projects. What’s more great is that the tickets are FREE! Also, it is extremely close to NYU’s Washington Square Park campus. Just last week Timothée Chalamet & Steve Carell were interviewed there. Get your free tickets here!
9. Museum of the Moving Image…where film comes alive
Explore the realms of Queens and the amazing things it has to offer. Inside the Museum of the Moving Image, you are immersed in the world of film, television, and digital media. There are exhibitions that submerge visitors in the creative process of making moving images. Jim Henson’s Fantastic World is a popular exhibition, which celebrates his iconic puppetry. You might recall some of his best-known projects: The Muppet Show, The Muppet Movie, and Sesame Street.
*PSSST… admission is free for NYU students and comes with a 15% discount at the museum store and cafe.
10. Visit the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx
Nature is underrated! Show appreciation to this 250-acre garden host of more than a million plants. Have you ever been in one of the greatest botanical gardens in the world and the largest in any city in the United States of America? If not you will truly enjoy the New York Botanical Garden and the culture behind it. It is also a museum; there are a bunch of exhibitions that connect to the arts and humanities. A favorite of mine is FRIDA KAHLO: Art, Garden, Life, which explored her artistry as a Mexican artist and relationship with nature.
*New York Botanical Garden has free admission every Wednesday and $7 tickets for students on every other day
