Coming from Greece, I can guarantee that it is a very beautiful country with the characteristic of combining sea, mountain, sun and snow all in a very photogenic way! I could be describing every inch of all the places I’ve been to in Greece, but for starters let me introduce you to my favorite city, Athens, in a way only a local could enjoy. Here are 10 of my favorite places to visit in Athens, Greece.

1. National Garden (formerly Royal Garden)

During the spring, when the rare flowers and plants start to bloom, it is a great experience to sit on a bench under the trees and read a book listening to the sounds of birds singing, while at the same time you are only five minutes from the city center.

2. Numismatic Museum

I haven’t actually visited the museum, but what I love about it is its garden, where there is a café which is great either for coffee or for a drink. You can drink your beverage while gazing at the stars at night or daydreaming during the day.

3. Public Café

What’s great about that is the café on the top of the store in Syntagma (Athens’s main square). The view from up there is breathtaking!

4. Agia Eirini Square

The best place to go for a walk and see young people relaxing drinking coffee. It’s the square where most students go to meet their friends and chat without having to worry about the time.

5. Kefalari, Kifissia

Kifissia is one of the most expensive northern suburbs of Athens. Kefalari is where people living there mostly go for shopping, coffee, drinks, and food. However, not only the locals like it, since it combines nature and fine living. Even a walk in the streets of Kefalari will lift your mood!

6. Chalandri

Chalandri is a suburb in the northern part of Athens. It is great for drinks since it has an active nightlife full of young people. It is not located in the center of Athens which makes it a bit more magical! There are some great places to visit in Athens, Greece.

7. Flisvos Marina

It’s where Athenians go to get a smell of the sea and gaze at the marvelous yachts that are on the docks. It isn’t exactly in the center of Athens, but a stroll there will convince you that it’s worth the drive.

8. Stavros Niarchos Foundation

What’s magical about it is the view from the top of the building. You can see every inch of Athens and Piraeus including a few small islands when the sky is clear. The secret is the elevator made of glass that takes you to the top, giving you the feeling that you’re flying!

9. Sounion

It may be known for the Temple of Poseidon and one of the best sunsets in Greece, but what I love about it is the feeling you get when the wind hits your body mercilessly. This place is very windy, but somehow if you let yourself feel the wind without resistance, first of all, you don’t fall and secondly, you understand the power of nature and your soul calms down.

10. Lake Marathon

It’s about one hour and a half away from the center of Athens, but it’ll be worth the while. Lake Marathon is a water supply reservoir that gives water to the entire city of Athens. It’s a very picturesque place, while there is a café there that lets you enjoy the beauty of nature. Last but not least, it is near the historical place of Marathon where the famous battle took place. If you ever find yourself in the area, these are the places to visit in Athens, Greece.
