The Negative Impact Of Social Media On Your Self Image

mm
Social media has become an advertising minefield that can brainwash us into thinking we need or want something we don't inherently want or need. The more we see something, the more it becomes a part of our societal norm and our narrative. Here is the negative impact of social media.

It is no doubt that social media is now, unfortunately, an unstoppable force. Let’s face it, we are all addicted. I wish I was making it up, but that is just a simple fact. Without knowing it, social media has affected my life in innumerable ways – Real talk, it can take a good day to a crappy one in two seconds. While it is a great platform for businesses, it has become an advertising minefield that can brainwash us into thinking we need or want something we don’t inherently want or need. The more we see something, the more it becomes a part of our societal norm and our narrative. Here is the negative impact of social media:

The strength and weakness of social media is that it has become a vehicle that allows us to create our own stories…”create” being the operative word. What I mean by that, is I am able to manipulate reality in a way that it benefits “me”.

Example:

Reality: Went to a music festival with friends, got in a fight with my boyfriend, left in tears.

Instagram: “Had so much fun Saturday!”

Now, the problem with this is that anyone who is following you is seeing your “highlight reel,” and, in turn, comparing their lives to yours. What this means? Social media can breed jealous, envy, and magnify insecurities. Essentially it becomes a vicious circle. We only post our highlight reels to make our life seem perfect which gives us “vanity validation.” Turning this social media usage into peer pressure that fosters FOMO.

In a study done by Clarissa Silva, 50% of people reported social media had a negative impact on their relationships, and 60% said it impacted their social life in a negative way.

So where do we go from there?

1. Live in the moment.

Don’t let the illusion of having social interaction trump the reality of hanging out with your friends and engaging in their lives.

2. Don’t live a double life.

The real you and the social media you should not be in opposition. Be true to who you are and surround yourself with people who push you to be the strongest most fulfilled version of yourself.

3. Be smart and recognize that things online are often unrealistic and we are all human.

There are plenty of great examples out there of people who are supportive and want to build each other up. Look to Demi Lovato, Kaitlyn Bristowe, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Mila Kunis, and so many more who are activists for positive self image.
