Being in a relationship during college means that their is also a likely chance that at some point it may become a long distance relationships. Having people attending your school from all over the state, country or even globe, means their is a chance that they do not live too close to your hometown. Or maybe you are a senior in High School and your significant other will not be going to school remotely close to you. Whether it sometime as short as winter break or long as life after graduation, you may find yourself in a long distance relationship. I have been in a long distance relationship before and I know sometimes that it can get hard when all you want to do is give them a hug, but it also has some upsides. Here are 15 ways to maintain your long distance relationship.

1. Set out rules and a plan before hand

Before leaving each other it is important to set out rules of what you “expect” of each person. For instance, are you two exclusive? Is it alright for the other person to go on dates? What is your commitment level?

2. Have a goal in mind.

Doing a long distance relationship can be tough, and you don’t want to do it just for fun. Where do you guys see yourself when you are back together? Do you want to live in the same city? Get married? Have children? Or are you fine with no plan?

3. Communicate daily.

Time zones can be tricky and you might both have hectic schedules but put in the effort to communicate daily! A simple exchange of good morning and good night texts can do wonders for you two. It’s a simple gesture that reminds the other person they are your first and last thought of the day, regardless of the busy lives you both lead in the middle. In today’s age, there’s no excuse not to reach out and let them know they are on your mind. So go ahead, text them “I’m thinking of you.”

It may be 2017, but their is nothing wrong with going the old-fashioned. We are all so use to receiving a million texts that take a few seconds to type. Take the time to write your significant other a personal letter, it could go a long way.

6. Plan a phone call, Skype or Facetime session once a week!

Make time for each other. Since an LDR lacks many physical aspects, all you two have to rely on is communication, it is what keeps the bond between the two of you strong. So find time once a week that works with both of your schedules, and put it aside for a virtual date! Whether you talk about anything and everything, watch a show on Netflix together, or simply just enjoy each other’s presence, nothing compares to getting to hear their voice again.
