One of my favorite parts about the fashion industry is getting to see past trends come back to life. Here are 8 Vintage Fashion Trends Making A Comeback from all different years!
You may not realize it, but fashion pieces that you see trending at the moment may have been seen nearly decades ago and are making quite the comeback. It’s basically a known fact that what was once in style may go out of style, but become a trending piece at a later date. This is why you shouldn’t always throw out or donate your old pieces, because they may become the next trending piece that everyone is dying to have. With the sustainable fashion movement, vintage fashion trends have become a great way to save your old clothes and re-wear them without having to buy new. This list combines many vintage fashion trends from a long time ago to just a few years back.
Corsets have recently become the new top that everyone needs in their wardrobes. I am so happy that corsets have become back into style this past year as they aren’t just cute but also incredibly flattering on all different body types. The corset has been around for centuries, originally worn in sixteenth-century Europe underneath dresses to accentuate the waist at its smallest point. Flash forward to 2020, and corsets were seen on many celebrities, such as Bella Hadid in the popular Vivienne Westwood corsets. Now corsets can be seen made by all your favorite brands in several different forms and styles and I don’t see them going away any time soon.
When I think of all denim, I automatically think of Britney and Justin’s iconic looks. I remember in high school I thought denim on denim was a strange concept that I never thought I would be seen wearing. However, that has changed as this look has now become on of my favorite vintage fashion trends. This look is super easy to recreate, as everyone has a pair of favorite jeans they own. Add a cute crop top, then throw on an oversized denim jacket to complete the look. I personally like to pair the same colored denim to create a cohesive look, but feel free to add different washes for a versatile look!
Designer bags have been a fashion trend that has never really gone out of style, but vintage bags from past years and seasons have recently become one of the most popular vintage fashion trends. This look is often spotted from a lot of street style I see out there. People have utilized those bags from older family members that they now are rocking, especially seen in mini over the shoulder bags. If you are looking to achieve this look but don’t have a lot of funds to spend, I recommend checking out your local thrift stores or consignment shops to discover some great vintage finds!
Sweater vests are another one of the vintage fashion trends that are currently trending, especially with the transition from fall to the winter season. Sweater vests became a very popular for staple for men’s fashion 1910s, then returned in the 1930s and 1940s. They then became a popular layering piece for women in the 80’s and 90’s, with their recent comeback seen all over social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. What I love most about sweater vests is how they can be styled so many different ways, worn on their own or thrown over a turtle neck long sleeve top. Recently the oversized sweater vests have been trending in stores for the past two years.
Knee High Boots have been around for centuries, but were got popular especially in the 60’s to the early 70’s. These were seen as a very sexy style of shoe for women to rock. This style of boots has never really gone away, but have made a huge comeback in 2021. These knee high boots come in many different styles, most with heels. Popular styles I’ve seen from stores currently include faux leather crocodile patterns and patent leather boots. These boots make the perfect addition to any outfit with a skirt or dress that is lacking a little something and look great paired with a fun printed pair of tights.
Tweed Sets were super popular for women’s fashion in the 50’s and 60’s, as a super elegant trend that is carefully made. Now, we see tweed suits coming back into style, especially worn by celebrities. Musics new it girl Olivia Rodrigo was recently seen rocking this look when visiting the White House in this vintage Chanel tweed jacket skirt suit from 1995. She looked more flawless than ever in this girly, unique fit.
Tennis skirts were originally made for well, the sport of tennis. However, now tennis skirts get sold out almost everywhere as the new skirt everyone has to have. I have always loved pleated skirts, especially the plaid look, but I didn’t realize how long they have been around for. In the 1920s, women began wearing long, pleated tennis skirts on the court. The pleated skirt style inspired by tennis skirts was also super popular in the 2000s, now known as a staple piece of Y2K fashion. You can now find these skirts in literally any color you can think of, but I personally love the plaid printed tennis skirts the most. These skirts look adorable styled with turtleneck sweaters or a crop top on a warmer day.
Hobo Bags were one of the most popular bags worn in the 90’s and early 2000’s but are now slowly coming back into style. We went through a long period in fashion where we all wore many crossbody bags or totes for carrying a lot of items. However, over the shoulder bags such as mini bags and hobo bags have recently replaced what was once popular. Hobo bags are known for their slouchy crescent shape and are usually leather, but also seen in suede materials as well. I recommend checking out thrift stores to get the look at an affordable price.
